We are currently experiencing one of the fastest and most significant disruptions in technology history. The rise of artificial intelligence promises incredible benefits like increased productivity, faster scientific discoveries, and broader access to expertise in vital sectors such as healthcare and education. Many early adopters are already automating their routine tasks, making this a remarkable time to be alive.

The Impact of AI on Hardware and Manufacturing

However, the rapid growth of AI is also causing serious problems for hardware supply chains. Major chip manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have shifted much of their production capacity toward high-bandwidth memory needed for AI applications. This shift has led to shortages of standard DRAM and NAND chips used in everyday devices like smartphones, laptops, and medical equipment.

As a result, hardware prices are increasing. The focus on AI chips means building non-AI electronics is becoming more expensive. By early 2026, prices for common computer memory and storage devices have surged, prompting many consumers to buy second-hand laptops instead of new ones. Additionally, shortages of GPUs—key components for AI processing—are delaying the release of new graphics cards and related devices, creating a backlog similar to the shortages seen during the COVID pandemic.

AI’s Effect on Innovation and Talent

The diversion of chips and resources toward AI infrastructure is also impacting other industries. Car manufacturers, appliance makers, and other hardware developers face shortages of essential components, slowing down new product launches. Meanwhile, non-AI startups are struggling to raise funds, as investors increasingly prioritize AI ventures. This shift is pushing many traditional tech companies to pivot toward AI or engage in “AI washing,” where they claim to be AI-focused without real innovation.

Furthermore, the AI boom is affecting the research landscape. Universities and research labs have historically been hubs for innovation and talent development. Now, top AI companies are hiring away leading researchers and engineers with lucrative salaries. This draining of expertise creates gaps in academic and non-AI research, threatening the pipeline of future talent in traditional software engineering and other fields. It also discourages students from entering tech careers, as companies focus heavily on AI, leaving fewer opportunities in other areas.

Overall, while AI offers many exciting possibilities, it is also creating significant challenges for the broader tech ecosystem. The current trends suggest a complex picture where progress in some areas may come at the expense of others. Whether this will ultimately slow down overall technological development remains to be seen, but it’s clear that AI’s impact extends far beyond just new software or applications.
