The Risks of Overdependence and Ethical Pitfalls
AI feels smart, but it isn’t intelligent. Hannah Yee-Fen Lim, an AI governance expert at Nanyang Technological University, warns about a big mistake: treating AI like a person. “Anthropomorphising artificial intelligence—treating AI as if it has emotions, intentions, or moral judgment—is both an ethical and a practical problem,” Lim states.
AI systems don’t understand or think. They predict the next word based on patterns in massive text data. Lim calls AI “a statistical tool” that produces “hallucinations,” which are errors and inaccuracies, not true intelligence.

Michael Gerlich’s 2025 research found frequent AI users scored lower on critical thinking tests. Younger users especially showed high AI dependence and low critical thinking.
Microsoft’s 2025 study adds to this concern. The more confident employees feel using AI, the less they apply critical thinking. This creates two patterns in workplaces: AI-native employees who use AI skillfully, and AI-dependent workers who offload thinking to AI. The difference is huge.

Yet, skill gaps loom. A 2025 PwC report shows AI skills evolve 66% faster in AI-exposed roles. IDC projects that by 2026, over 90% of global enterprises will face critical AI skills shortages. This shortage could cost up to $5.5 trillion in market performance.
Slalom’s 2026 report reveals 68% of leaders and employees believe they can keep up with AI. But 93% admit their skills and training aren’t enough. Many organizations don’t even track how many workers are AI-native versus AI-dependent. This blind spot risks productivity and innovation.
Some companies try new approaches. Brown University’s economics professor Roberto Serrano let students take midterms at home with unlimited time but harder questions. It’s a way to adjust to AI’s presence while preserving critical skills.
Top organizations invest in AI fluency as a structured capability. They build role-specific training, mentorship, and assessments. They also create spaces where employees work without AI. This helps prevent dependency and keeps thinking sharp.
