By 2026, many organizations will expand their teams of AI agents across different roles and functions. As this growth accelerates, a crucial challenge emerges: ensuring these agents can work together securely and reliably. Experts warn that without proper controls, AI-driven operations could lead to legal issues, fines, or leadership dismissals by 2030. To address this, innovative solutions are being developed to create trustworthy, interconnected AI networks.

The Need for Trust in AI Agent Networks

As AI agents become more common, their interactions will become more complex. Imagine a scenario where multiple AI agents from different companies coordinate a travel booking. Your hotel agent might buy a plane ticket from an airline agent seamlessly. But to make such transactions possible, there needs to be a system of trust that allows these agents to interact and even exchange money safely.

This is where the concept of decentralization comes into play. Instead of relying on a central payment system, the agents are equipped with digital wallets. They can send stablecoins directly to each other, enabling trustless and secure transactions. This approach removes the need for a third-party intermediary, making interactions faster and more transparent.

The Masumi Network: A Fusion of AI and Blockchain

The Masumi Network is a new infrastructure designed to support this vision. It was launched in late 2024 through a collaboration between blockchain platform NMKR and the marketing firm Serviceplan Group. The network is framework-agnostic, meaning it can work with various blockchain systems and tools.

At its core, Masumi aims to empower developers to create autonomous AI agents that can collaborate, monetize services, and maintain verifiable trust. Patrick Tobler, CEO of NMKR, explains that the future will see billions of AI agents from different companies interacting. The challenge is enabling these agents to communicate and transact securely across organizational boundaries.

Tobler emphasizes that Masumi’s decentralized design doesn’t depend on any central payment infrastructure. Instead, each agent has a wallet that allows it to send stablecoins to others, creating a trustless environment where transactions are safe and verifiable. This setup mimics some solutions already proven in the crypto world but tailored for AI agents.

Crypto Solutions for Agent Interactions

Tobler, who has extensive experience in crypto, believes many of the problems faced by AI agents have already been solved in blockchain technology. He points out that crypto and blockchain tools are often difficult for humans to use, but for AI agents, these issues are irrelevant. Agents operate natively with these systems, making interactions seamless and efficient.

He notes that many of the technical hurdles—like secure transactions and identity verification—are already addressed by crypto solutions. This allows AI agents to interact at scale, handling millions or even billions of transactions without compromising security or trust.

Currently, Tobler is involved in speaking engagements and partnerships, such as the AI & Big Data Expo Global, where he discusses these innovations. Both NMKR and Masumi are built on the Cardano blockchain, highlighting the platform’s role in supporting this emerging ecosystem.

Overall, the fusion of AI and blockchain promises a future where autonomous agents can work together reliably, opening up new possibilities for automation, commerce, and trust in digital interactions. As these technologies mature, they could fundamentally reshape how organizations and systems operate in the coming years.
