Microsoft Adds New AI Features to Fabric for Smarter Data Workflows

Microsoft is rolling out two new features for its cloud platform called Fabric. These additions are meant to help applications make smarter decisions when dealing with complex tasks. They also aim to help developers include AI insights directly into their company’s data processes.

Fabric, which came out in May 2023, is a big platform that combines six different tools, called workloads. These are Data Factory, Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Data Science, Real-Time Intelligence, and Power BI. The goal is to make it easier and cheaper for companies to handle their data and avoid complicated setups. The new features, Graph and Maps, are part of the Real-Time Intelligence workload. This part of Fabric is focused on helping businesses make better choices by analyzing live data streams.

Introducing the Graph and Maps Features

The Graph feature uses technology originally developed by LinkedIn. It helps visualize relationships between data points and makes it easier to ask questions using natural language. Microsoft’s VP of Azure Data explained that they needed a strong graph database to build on, but they didn’t have one in-house. So, they teamed up with LinkedIn’s experts in graph technology. This partnership gives Fabric access to LinkedIn’s proven methods for modeling complex connections, like relationships between people or companies.

Industry experts believe these new tools will help companies improve how their AI systems understand data relationships. For example, the Graph feature can make searches faster and more accurate by showing how data points are connected. It also allows visual exploration of data, which can be very helpful for analysts. Instead of looking at separate tables, AI agents can now see how different pieces of data relate to each other, such as suppliers, customers, or operational contacts.

Maps is another addition that adds a geographic perspective to data. It turns large amounts of location-based information into interactive maps that update in real time. This can be especially useful in sectors like supply chain management, retail, and healthcare. For instance, Maps can help track shipments, plan service areas, or analyze customer demographics. Meanwhile, Graph can model relationships like supplier dependencies or patient-doctor connections. Both features are available for testing now and are in what’s called public preview.

New Developer Tool Boosts Fabric’s Flexibility

To make it easier for developers to connect their applications with Fabric, Microsoft has introduced a new tool called the Fabric MCP Server. This server is open source, meaning anyone can access and modify it. It works with popular developer tools like Visual Studio Code and GitHub Codespaces. With it, developers can create data pipelines, notebooks, or other Fabric components using natural language prompts. It also helps generate code based on the context, speeding up the development process.

Experts see this MCP Server as a key step forward. It provides a standard way for developers to work with Fabric’s APIs, making it easier to build AI-powered data applications. Instead of dealing with each API separately, developers can use the MCP Server to streamline their work. This integration with familiar tools like VS Code helps reduce the learning curve and speeds up project timelines.

Microsoft isn’t the only company offering such tools. Rivals like Snowflake, Databricks, and Teradata also have their own MCP solutions. However, industry analysts say that having an MCP is only part of the equation. The real value comes from how it’s used together with other features. Microsoft’s combination of MCP with the new Graph and Maps tools, plus seamless integration with Visual Studio Code, makes Fabric a more powerful platform for decision-making and automation.

Right now, the Fabric MCP Server and the new features are available for testing in what’s called a preview. Companies can try them out and see how they improve their data workflows and AI capabilities. As these tools evolve, they are expected to help businesses make faster, smarter decisions in an increasingly data-driven world.
