Microsoft Expands AI Options in Office with New Partner Anthropic

This change marks the end of Microsoft’s long-standing exclusive relationship with OpenAI for generative AI features in programs like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Instead, users will soon see AI models from Anthropic being integrated into their productivity tools.
This shift comes after internal tests showed that Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model performs particularly well in tasks where OpenAI’s models sometimes fall short. Specifically, Anthropic’s AI seems better at visual design and automating spreadsheets. Microsoft’s decision to bring in Anthropic is not just a negotiation tactic but appears to be based on these performance results.
Why Microsoft is Adding Anthropic to Its AI Mix
Sources say that Microsoft will purchase access to Anthropic’s models through Amazon Web Services. That’s an interesting choice because AWS is both a cloud competitor and a major investor in Anthropic. Amazon invested around $4 billion in Anthropic in 2023 and provides the cloud infrastructure that powers many of its models. Now, Microsoft will use that same infrastructure indirectly to enhance its Office AI features.
The plan is to introduce Anthropic’s AI into Office within weeks. Despite this addition, Microsoft insists its partnership with OpenAI remains strong. A spokesperson told Reuters that OpenAI will continue working with Microsoft on cutting-edge models and that their long-term relationship is unchanged. Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI so far and is currently negotiating new terms for ongoing access to its models.
The Broader AI Strategy of Microsoft and OpenAI
Microsoft’s close partnership with OpenAI started in 2019, giving it a head start on integrating AI into its products. This led to features like AI-powered search in Bing and the popular Copilot assistants in Office. However, recent reports show that some users haven’t experienced clear productivity gains from Copilot, raising questions about how effective these AI tools are in everyday work.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also diversifying its AI sources. In June, it announced plans to use Google’s cloud infrastructure, even though Google and OpenAI are competitors. OpenAI is also working on launching a jobs platform that could rival LinkedIn and plans to produce its own AI chips with Broadcom starting in 2026. These moves suggest both companies are trying to reduce reliance on a single cloud provider and strengthen their independent AI strategies.
Beyond adding Anthropic, Microsoft has been developing its own AI models. It started offering DeepSeek’s technology through Azure in January and already provides AI models like Claude via its GitHub Copilot platform. For Anthropic, the partnership with Microsoft is a major win, especially considering Anthropic’s origins. The company was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, including CEO Dario Amodei, and positions its Claude models as safer, more controllable alternatives to ChatGPT.
