Microsoft has announced significant progress on its native port of the TypeScript language service and compiler, aiming for an early 2026 release. This effort, part of the upcoming TypeScript 7.0, focuses on enhancing performance, memory efficiency, and parallelism by porting core components to native code.

Upcoming Releases and Transition Timeline

The company plans to release TypeScript 6.0, which will be the final JavaScript-based version, bridging the current TypeScript 5.9 to the new 7.0. Microsoft has indicated that TypeScript 6.0 will serve as a transitional release, with a target of early 2026 for both TypeScript 6.0 and 7.0. The codebase is publicly available on the TypeScript-go GitHub repository, allowing developers to follow progress and contribute.

Microsoft’s goal is to ensure a smooth transition, with most editing features already functional in TypeScript 7.0, while some features are still being ported. The updated language service has been rearchitected to improve reliability and leverage shared-memory parallelism, promising a better experience for developers using tools like Visual Studio Code.

Progress on the TypeScript 7.0 Compiler and Testing

The native port of the TypeScript compiler has also advanced considerably, with type checking for TypeScript 7.0 nearing completion. Rosenwasser, a Microsoft principal product manager, confirmed that TypeScript 7.0’s type checker produces results consistent with TypeScript 5.9, based on extensive testing involving around 20,000 compiler test cases.

Developers can currently confidently use TypeScript 7.0 to validate projects, with features like –incremental, project reference support, and –build mode fully ported and functional. However, certain JavaScript emit features, such as –watch and API capabilities, are still in development, and the Strada API will not be supported in Corsa.

Overall, Microsoft emphasizes that TypeScript 6.0 acts as a bridge release, with plans to focus on the native port’s stability and performance improvements leading up to early 2026.
