Microsoft Update Causes MSMQ Failures Disrupting Business Applications

This update, released during December’s Patch Tuesday, has reportedly led to problems in various enterprise systems and IoT devices. Some users have even linked the update to failures in critical systems like point-of-sale and fire alarm networks. While Microsoft says most personal devices are unaffected, many larger organizations are experiencing significant disruptions.
What Is MSMQ and Why Is It Important?
MSMQ is a protocol used for secure messaging between different applications or services. It helps ensure messages are delivered reliably across networks, even if some systems are temporarily offline. Businesses rely on MSMQ for important functions like transaction processing, communication between servers, and IoT device management. When MSMQ fails, it can cause applications to freeze, data to be lost, and critical systems to stop working altogether.
The recent issues appear mainly in enterprise and managed IT environments. For example, some reports mention that a point-of-sale system was unable to issue receipts, while others describe fire alarm systems in buildings being offline. These kinds of failures underscore how vital MSMQ is for everyday operations in many sectors.
The Cause of the Issue and Which Systems Are Affected
The problem stems from a security update (KB5071546) released by Microsoft. This update changed the security settings and permissions for the MSMQ folder on Windows systems, especially the C:\Windows\System32\msmq\ directory. Normally, only administrators can write to this folder, but the update requires applications to have write access as well. This new requirement has caused message-sending failures and resource errors.
The update primarily affects Windows Server 2016, 2019, and older versions like Windows Server 2012 R2. It also impacts Windows 10 versions 22H2, 21H2, 1809, and 1607. Since support for Windows 10 1607 ended in October, only those with extended support are likely to encounter issues. Microsoft notes that personal versions like Windows Home or Pro are very unlikely to experience these problems.
In affected systems, symptoms include MSMQ becoming inactive, IIS sites failing with errors about insufficient resources, applications being unable to write messages, and misleading logs suggesting low disk space despite having enough resources. These problems can seriously disrupt business operations and IoT networks.
What Can Be Done and Microsoft’s Response
Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and says a workaround exists. However, instead of providing detailed steps publicly, they recommend affected organizations contact Microsoft Support for Business. This has raised concerns among users, as some see it as a lack of transparency or delay in providing solutions.
Until a fix is released, organizations using affected systems are advised to reach out to Microsoft Support and follow their guidance. It’s also recommended to review permissions on MSMQ folders and consider rolling back updates if necessary, though these actions should be taken carefully to avoid further complications.
Microsoft has assured users they are investigating the problem and will provide more information soon. For now, organizations should monitor their systems closely and prepare for possible disruptions stemming from this update.
