Microsoft’s recent branding of AI-enabled PCs under the Copilot+ moniker has faced significant criticism from industry analysts. Many believe that the hype surrounding these devices has created confusion among consumers and failed to meet expectations, prompting calls for Microsoft to reconsider its branding strategy.

Confusion and Over-Hyped Promises

Introduced in 2024, Copilot+ Windows 11 PCs boast on-device AI capabilities, including neural processing units (NPUs) that allow AI applications to run without an internet connection. However, according to experts like Jim McGregor of Tirias Research, these claims have only added headaches for users and have not delivered the revolutionary experience promised. Many PCs already handle some AI tasks, often better served through cloud-based solutions, making the hype unnecessary and confusing.

McGregor criticized the industry’s push for “jazzed-up” AI PCs, noting that technical barriers—such as high AI performance standards set by Microsoft—have complicated consumer understanding. Buyers who believed they were purchasing standard Windows computers with AI features instead found themselves with costly devices that offered limited practical applications.

Limited Impact and Industry Reception

During the recent Ignite conference, Microsoft shifted focus towards its Windows 365 cloud PC platform, highlighting new AI features like AI agents, rather than emphasizing AI PCs themselves. Some small AI features exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, such as Fluid dictation and offline writing assistance, were announced but failed to garner significant attention amidst the event’s broader announcements.

Microsoft maintains that it remains committed to enhancing AI capabilities on Copilot+ PCs, citing improvements like better Windows search, Recall (preview), and Click to Do. However, industry experts like Bob O’Donnell from Technalysis Research argue that many enterprises bought AI PCs without a clear understanding of their use cases, especially when cloud solutions could fulfill similar needs more flexibly.

Furthermore, the added cost of AI hardware and the limited practical applications have led analysts to question the value of on-device AI. Jitesh Ubrani of IDC points out that, given current economic challenges and the lack of compelling on-device AI use cases, the market has not responded enthusiastically to Copilot+ PCs. Overall, the hype has not translated into meaningful excitement or sales in the AI PC segment.
