Elon Musk Threatens Legal Action Against Apple Over App Store Rankings
Elon Musk has taken to social media to accuse Apple of unfairly ranking apps and to threaten legal action. He claims that Apple is deliberately favoring ChatGPT over Grok in the App Store, which he says is an antitrust violation. Musk didn’t provide specific proof but expressed frustration that Grok, an AI tool from Musk’s company xAI, is ranked behind ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Musk’s beef with Apple stems from a partnership they announced last year. Apple integrated ChatGPT into its devices, and Musk believes this move gave ChatGPT an unfair advantage. Right now, ChatGPT is the top free app on the US App Store, with Grok sitting at fifth place. On Google Play, ChatGPT also leads the rankings. Musk argues that Apple’s actions seem politically motivated or at least unfair to competitors like Grok.
Apple hasn’t responded to Musk’s claims or requests for comment. The controversy has drawn attention to the broader issue of app store competition and whether big tech companies are manipulating rankings to favor certain products. Musk’s critics point out that there have been recent instances where other AI tools have temporarily overtaken ChatGPT in the rankings, challenging Musk’s claim that ChatGPT is permanently locked in the lead.
The dispute is more than just about rankings. Musk’s accusations may also be part of a larger strategy. He’s been involved in a long-standing legal battle with OpenAI, which he co-founded but now opposes. Musk previously sued OpenAI, accusing the company of misleading him when he invested early on. OpenAI, for its part, has accused Musk of acting in bad faith in that lawsuit, alleging he’s been trying to interfere with OpenAI’s operations and undermine its mission.
OpenAI’s lawsuit against Musk involves accusations that he’s refused to cooperate with discovery and has tried to manipulate the legal process. They say Musk has a history of attempting to control OpenAI’s direction, including efforts to turn it into a for-profit company that would benefit Musk’s other businesses like Tesla. OpenAI also claims Musk signed a letter calling for a pause on AI development in 2023, which they suggest was a move to buy time to catch up with ChatGPT.
The legal fight could get more complicated. OpenAI is seeking to subpoena Musk’s lawyer, Marc Toberoff, alleging he played a role in Musk’s failed bid to take over OpenAI. If OpenAI wins, Musk’s claims against them might weaken, and his efforts to outdo OpenAI with Grok could be thwarted.
Meanwhile, Musk has announced that Grok 5 will soon surpass OpenAI’s GPT-5 in performance. But if the lawsuit turns against him, Musk might face consequences that could slow down his AI ambitions. OpenAI’s ongoing legal battle and Musk’s public accusations highlight the fierce competition and complex politics behind AI development today.
As these disputes unfold, it’s clear that the fight over AI dominance and app store rankings is about more than just technology — it’s about control, influence, and the future of the industry.
