Mythos AI’s Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) is designed to make maritime navigation smarter. It uses a radar-first approach combined with other sensors to understand the ship’s surroundings. The system aims to support crew members, reduce their mental workload, and improve situational awareness at sea.

According to Mythos AI’s CEO, Geoff Douglass, the goal isn’t to take over the crew’s job but to give them better tools. APAS integrates radar data, machine vision, and smart alerts to help mariners make clearer decisions. It processes complex situations quickly, making navigation safer and more reliable.

Testing and Collaboration in Real-World Conditions

The CB Pacific, a chemical cargo vessel owned by CB Tankers, was chosen for the initial trial. The ship’s predictable routes and reliable radar made it a good test platform. This trial follows an earlier test on a towboat on the Mississippi River, which took place in August 2025. The current project is planned to last a year, aiming to bring advanced technology into everyday operations.

Mythos AI is working closely with partners like Lomarlabs and CB Tankers. Douglass explains that working with experienced mariners and port norms helps ensure the system works well globally. The trial will assess if APAS can operate safely and follow international rules, such as COLREG regulations that prevent collisions at sea.

Stylianos Papageorgiou, managing director of Lomarlabs, highlights how important real-world testing is for advancing maritime AI. Practical experience helps identify what works and what needs improvement, pushing the industry forward through hands-on development.

The Future of AI in Maritime Navigation

The APAS project marks an important step toward widespread use of AI in shipping. As the technology proves its safety and effectiveness, more fleets may adopt similar systems. There’s also growing interest from defense sectors, seeing potential for strategic advantages in AI-powered navigation.
