Netflix has grown into more than just a streaming service. It’s a worldwide entertainment giant that influences how millions watch shows and movies. From its start as a DVD mail-order company in the late 1990s, Netflix has become a platform with hundreds of millions of subscribers. It’s reshaped the media industry and changed viewer habits around the world.

How Many People Are Watching Netflix?

As of the end of 2024, Netflix has about 301.6 million paid subscribers globally. The company had a strong final quarter, adding nearly 19 million new members. Most of these subscribers come from regions like Europe, the U.S. and Canada, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. For example, Europe, Middle East, and Africa combined have over 101 million users, while North America has about 89.6 million.

One interesting trend is the growth of the ad-supported plan. By May 2025, around 94 million subscribers opted for the cheaper, ad-supported tier. Netflix has also stopped sharing detailed quarterly subscriber counts since early 2025, focusing instead on revenue and other metrics. Still, it’s clear that Netflix’s audience is expanding, especially in Asia and through its lower-cost plans.

Where Is Netflix Available and Which Countries Have the Most Subscribers?

Netflix is accessible in over 190 countries. However, a few places like China, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and Crimea are not served. The service’s content library varies based on location, with licensing rights, language options, and prices differing from country to country.

The biggest markets by number of subscribers include the United States, with about 81.4 million. Other large markets are Brazil with over 16.5 million, Germany also around 16.5 million, the UK with 18.4 million, and France at roughly 13.5 million. Countries like Mexico, Japan, and Canada also have millions of users, highlighting Netflix’s strong presence in both North America and parts of Latin America and Asia.

Which Countries Have the Largest Netflix Libraries and User Demographics?

Interestingly, Slovakia has the largest Netflix library in terms of titles available—over 7,000 movies and shows. Many European countries like Bulgaria, Iceland, and the UK also boast libraries with 7,000 to 8,000 titles. Surprisingly, the U.S. doesn’t always have the biggest library in terms of total titles; some smaller European markets hold more due to licensing and local content licensing agreements. Countries like Sudan have much smaller libraries, with fewer than 1,000 titles.

In terms of who watches Netflix, younger adults are the most frequent users. A 2025 survey shows around 80% of U.S. adults under 30 and those aged 30-49 use Netflix. Usage drops with older age groups, with just over half of adults 65 and older watching Netflix regularly. Demographically, Millennials make up about a third of users, followed by Generation X and Gen Z, each with significant shares of the platform’s audience.

Overall, Netflix’s reach is vast and diverse. Its subscriber numbers, regional content differences, and demographic trends reveal how deeply it has become part of daily life worldwide. Despite increasing competition, Netflix remains a dominant player, constantly adapting to new markets and viewer preferences. It’s not just about what people watch, but how it continues to influence entertainment habits around the globe.
