A recent poll from the Pew Research Center shows that many Americans are growing skeptical about AI. Out of over 5,000 adults surveyed in June, more than half believe AI could hurt our ability to think creatively. Half also worry that AI might damage the way we form meaningful relationships. Only a small number, five percent, think AI will improve these skills.

The poll shows a shift in how people view AI compared to a few years ago. More Americans now feel concerned about AI’s impact. In 2021, only 37 percent said they were more worried than excited about AI. Now, that number has jumped to 50 percent. Meanwhile, just ten percent say they’re more excited than concerned. Most people don’t share the optimism that many tech leaders have about AI’s future.

Growing Distrust and the Blurring Line Between Reality and AI

One big issue is how advanced AI tools have become at creating realistic images, videos, and text. These tools can produce images that look real or generate convincing but false stories. Many people find it hard to tell whether something was made by a human or AI. According to the poll, 53 percent are not very confident they can tell the difference. Still, most—76 percent—think it’s very important to be able to recognize AI-generated content.

This concern about authenticity is not new, but it’s more urgent now. As AI gets better at mimicking reality, it becomes harder to trust what we see, hear, or read online. This growing distrust might come from increased awareness and understanding of AI. A recent study found that people with less familiarity with AI tend to be more receptive to it. In other words, the more you know about AI, the more cautious you might become.

The Industry’s Optimism vs. Public Skepticism

Despite the widespread concerns, many in the tech industry remain very optimistic about AI’s potential. Some believe AI will lead to a new era of abundance and innovation. For example, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen has talked about AI transforming society for the better. Big tech companies continue to push AI forward, making it a part of everyday life.

But the public backlash is growing. Many people feel overwhelmed or even exhausted by AI’s rapid integration into daily routines. The disillusionment is understandable given the fears about job loss, privacy, and the spread of false information. As AI tools become more powerful, the gap between the industry’s enthusiasm and the public’s concerns widens. People want to feel confident about what they’re consuming online, but the current landscape makes that difficult.

In the end, it seems clear that trust in AI is waning among everyday Americans. While the tech industry pushes for more automation and innovation, many feel uneasy about what AI might mean for society. As these technologies continue to evolve, striking a balance between progress and caution will be more important than ever.
