Notion has taken a big step forward by transforming its workspace into a central hub for AI agents and automation. The company announced a new developer platform that makes it easier for teams to build, connect, and automate workflows across multiple tools and data sources. This shift positions Notion as more than just a note-taking app—it’s evolving into a platform for integrating AI-driven processes and custom code.

Building a More Flexible AI Ecosystem

Earlier this year, Notion introduced Custom Agents — AI assistants that help with repetitive tasks like answering FAQs, compiling updates, or automating simple workflows. Since then, users have created over one million of these agents. However, these initial tools had limitations—they couldn’t connect with external data or use custom logic beyond predefined tasks.

With the new platform, Notion is addressing these issues by allowing teams to deploy their own custom code through a feature called Workers. This cloud-based environment enables users to write and run code in a secure sandbox, making it possible to sync data from outside sources, automate complex workflows, and trigger actions via webhooks without relying on external systems. Importantly, users can do this without needing to write code themselves—an AI coding assistant can help generate the necessary scripts.

Connecting Data and External AI Agents

The platform also introduces the ability to sync data from external databases like Salesforce, Zendesk, or Postgres directly into Notion. Powered by Workers, this feature keeps data current and accessible, turning Notion into a versatile canvas for powering workflows and AI agents. Users can now utilize their Notion databases to orchestrate tasks, analyze data, or trigger automated processes across different platforms.

Another major update is the support for external AI agents. Notion users can now chat with and assign work to outside AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon. These external agents can be integrated into Notion’s environment via an External Agent API, allowing teams to connect internal or third-party AI systems directly. This creates a seamless experience where external AI can act within Notion, track progress, and collaborate with team members.

This development marks a significant shift for Notion, turning it into a programmable platform rather than just a productivity app. It provides a unified interface for managing data, automating workflows, and deploying AI agents—all within a single workspace. This approach aligns with broader trends in AI, where tools are moving beyond simple chatbots to become active participants in business processes and software ecosystems.

Developers can access these new features using the Notion CLI, a command-line tool available on higher-tier plans. This makes it easier for teams to customize and extend their workflows, setting Notion up as core infrastructure for automation and AI integration. As the platform continues to evolve, it aims to support any data source, tool, or agent, making it a comprehensive environment for modern knowledge work and automation.
