OpenLight has announced a major boost in its funding, raising $34 million in a Series A round. This investment will help the company develop its advanced photonics chips, which are designed to deliver high performance and energy efficiency for AI data centers. The round was oversubscribed and was led by Xora Innovation and Capricorn Investment Group, with participation from notable industry players such as Mayfield, Juniper Networks (now part of HPE), Lam Capital, New Legacy Ventures, and K2 Access. This milestone marks a new chapter for OpenLight as it moves from being a subsidiary of Synopsys to an independent, venture-backed startup based in Santa Barbara.

Driving Growth in Optical Technologies for AI

The new funding positions OpenLight at the forefront of the growing need for optical interconnects in AI data centers. As AI workloads continue to expand rapidly, there’s an increasing demand for solutions that can handle high bandwidth while remaining energy-efficient. OpenLight’s photonics platform is tailored to meet this challenge by offering innovative chips that enable faster and more efficient data transfer across data centers. This shift is crucial as companies look for ways to improve performance and reduce energy costs in large-scale AI operations.

Industry experts see photonics as a key growth area in the tech world. The field is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years, but scaling production remains a significant challenge. Phil Inagaki, Managing Partner at Xora Innovation, believes that OpenLight’s Process Design Kit (PDK) could be a vital part of solving this. Xora sees photonics as increasingly important for AI infrastructure, and OpenLight’s unique PDK offering, which includes both passive and active components, puts the company in a strong position to capitalize on this trend.

Expanding Capabilities and Accelerating Innovation

The new funding will allow OpenLight to expand its product offerings and speed up the development of its photonics technologies. The company plans to grow its Process Design Kit library, adding more components that are essential for designing high-speed photonic circuits. They also aim to fast-track their roadmap for creating standardized Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) capable of reaching 1.6Tb/s and 3.2Tb/s speeds, which are crucial for next-generation AI data centers.

OpenLight’s PDK has already gained traction in the industry, with over 20 companies designing custom photonic integrated circuits (PASICs) using their platform. The fresh capital will help the company expand its team over the next year, supporting partners as they move from initial prototypes to large-scale production. CEO Dr. Adam Carter expressed enthusiasm about the company’s growth, highlighting the strength of their new investors and their deep expertise in semiconductors and photonics.

At the core of OpenLight’s platform is its foundry-validated PDK, built on the integration of indium phosphide and silicon photonics. This innovative approach allows for high-performance, scalable manufacturing of optical chips that are essential for future AI data centers. As demand for high-bandwidth, energy-efficient solutions increases, OpenLight’s technology is well-positioned to play a key role in shaping the future of optical interconnects for AI infrastructure.
