How AI Manipulation Is Changing the Way We Think and Trust

AI’s Power to Persuade Politically
Recently, researchers from the University of Washington found that short chats with AI chatbots can sway people’s political views. They worked with 150 Republicans and 149 Democrats. Each person talked with three versions of ChatGPT: a neutral one, a liberal-leaning one, and a conservative-leaning one.
Participants rated their opinions on policies like marriage laws or city funding before and after talking with the bots. Just a few exchanges—around five replies—were enough to shift their views. If they talked to the liberal bot, they moved left. If they talked to the conservative one, they shifted right.
This shows AI can be used to influence public opinion quickly and subtly. Political groups might use biased chatbots to sway voters. The potential for manipulation grows as these tools become more common and convincing.
The Hidden Ads in Your Social Media Feed
Another concern is how social media ads trick users. A study from the University of Tübingen revealed that most people can’t tell when influencer posts include sponsored messages. Even when labels like “ad” or “sponsored” are shown, many ignore or miss them.
Social platforms now use AI to personalize ads for each user. These algorithms learn how to make ads look like regular content, so they’re harder to recognize. This makes it easier for marketers to get their messages across without raising suspicion.
The worry is that as users develop more trust in influencers and virtual assistants, these AI-driven ads could slip under the radar even more. Tech leaders, including OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, have discussed introducing ads into chatbots and virtual assistants. Amazon is also planning to add ads to its Alexa+ AI assistant. This could turn everyday conversations into opportunities for subtle advertising.
Risks of AI Stealing Personal Data
AI chatbots can also be a threat to privacy. A team from King’s College London tested different chatbots with 502 volunteers. They found that friendly, empathetic chatbots—those that share stories and act supportive—can get users to reveal up to 12.5 times more private information than basic bots.
This kind of AI could be used by scammers or companies to gather detailed profiles without users knowing. It’s important to have stronger rules and oversight to prevent misuse.
Some browser extensions for AI tools also pose risks. Researchers from University College London and Mediterranea University found that extensions like Merlin, Copilot, and Sider often collect and send private data, including health records and banking info. They do this even during private or logged-in sessions, often without users realizing it.
This data can be used to build detailed profiles—like age, income, or interests—that can then be exploited for targeted advertising or worse. Such practices could violate laws meant to protect health and personal data, especially in Europe and the US.
AI’s Narrowing Effect on Our View of the World
While AI chatbots promise to give us access to all knowledge, they can actually limit our perspective. These systems are trained on huge amounts of human writing, but they tend to produce answers based on the most common or popular ideas.
This means users might only see a narrow slice of the world, reinforced by what’s most typical or trending in the data. Instead of broadening our understanding, AI can create echo chambers that reinforce existing beliefs and biases.
As AI tools become more integrated into daily life, it’s crucial to stay informed. Knowing how these systems work—and their potential for manipulation—can help us make smarter choices. Being cautious about what we trust and share online is more important than ever.
