The Linux Foundation is starting a new organization called the React Foundation. Its job is to support React, React Native, and related projects. React is a popular open source JavaScript library used to build web and mobile user interfaces. Until now, React was managed by Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook. Now, the React Foundation will take over, ensuring React stays open and community-focused.

This move is meant to keep React neutral and innovative. Jim Zemlin, the Linux Foundation’s executive director, said the foundation will help React grow and stay true to its open source roots. The announcement was made on October 7. With the foundation in place, React can continue to evolve with input from a broad community of developers and companies.

What React and React Native Do

React is used in building interactive websites and web apps. It makes it easier to create dynamic content that updates smoothly. React Native extends this power to mobile app development, allowing developers to write code that works on both iOS and Android devices. This cross-platform approach saves time and effort.

According to BuiltWith, nearly 55 million websites use React. That shows how widespread and important React has become for front-end development. Originally, React was developed by Facebook, and it was known as a Facebook project. When Meta rebranded in October 2021, React remained under Meta’s umbrella. Now, with the foundation, React will have a more neutral home.

Who’s Behind the React Foundation

The foundation’s founding members include big names like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Vercel, and others like Callstack, Expo, and Software Mansion. These companies are committed to keeping React open and supporting its growth. The foundation will oversee governance, manage core tools, organize events, and create new programs to help developers connect and collaborate globally.

Seth Webster, who leads React at Meta, will be the executive director of the React Foundation. His role will involve guiding the foundation’s efforts and ensuring that React continues to thrive as a community-led project. The foundation aims to be a hub for innovation and shared development, making sure React stays a vital part of web and app development worldwide.

In summary, the launch of the React Foundation marks an important step for the future of React. It aims to keep the technology open and community-driven, while supporting its rapid growth and widespread adoption. This new organization will help developers, companies, and enthusiasts work together to shape the next chapters of React’s story.
