Red Hat Powers UK MOD’s Unified AI and Edge Strategy
The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has teamed up with Red Hat to create a single, unified platform for AI and hybrid cloud technology across its entire operations. This move aims to streamline data management and speed up how AI models are deployed from central data centres to field devices. It reflects a shift for the MOD from isolated AI projects to a more integrated, platform-based approach that supports various branches and systems.
Building a Flexible AI Infrastructure
The agreement centers around modernizing the MOD’s Defence Digital Foundry, the main software hub for the armed forces. The Foundry will now offer a consistent environment for machine learning operations (MLOps) to all branches, including the Navy, Army, and Air Force. At the heart of this effort is Red Hat AI, which includes Red Hat OpenShift AI, a platform designed to solve common enterprise AI challenges—especially the “inference gap,” or the difficulty of applying data science models in real-world situations.
This platform allows MOD developers to collaborate more easily, pick suitable AI models, and choose hardware accelerators that fit their specific needs. Importantly, it avoids vendor lock-in, giving teams the freedom to develop once and deploy anywhere—whether on-premises, in the cloud, or on disconnected devices in the field. Standardizing on Red Hat’s infrastructure helps reduce duplicated efforts and makes scaling AI initiatives more practical across the entire defense network.
Bridging Old and New Systems
A key challenge in defense modernization is managing legacy systems alongside new AI technologies. The MOD’s deal with Red Hat includes OpenShift Virtualization, which provides a clear path to migrate traditional virtual machines into the modern container environment. This means the MOD can run older workloads alongside new neural network applications on the same control plane, simplifying operations and cutting costs.
Automation is also a big part of the plan. The MOD will use Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to manage AI workflows across the organization. This ensures that as models are retrained and redeployed, security, governance, and configuration standards are maintained without extra manual effort. Automation helps keep everything compliant with strict defense standards while enabling faster updates and deployments.
Security remains a top priority when deploying AI in defense environments. The integrated ecosystem of Red Hat tools is designed to meet the high-security requirements of military applications, ensuring that sensitive data and AI models are protected at every stage. Overall, this partnership is about creating a scalable, secure, and flexible AI foundation that can evolve alongside future technological needs of the UK MOD.
