Colin Angle, the inventor of the popular Roomba vacuum, is venturing into a new area of home robotics. This time, he’s creating lifelike, AI-powered furry companions designed to stay in your house. These robots, called “Familiars,” aim to offer emotional connection rather than just perform tasks.

Familiar Robots: The Next Step in Home Companions

Unlike traditional robots, Familiars are intended to be more than tools—they’re meant to feel like pets. They have a furry exterior, expressive body language, and sounds like meowing or purring. Powered by on-device generative AI, they can interact with owners and develop unique personalities over time.

Angle emphasizes that the goal isn’t just to create cute robots but to foster real bonds. He believes that the future of robotics involves machines that can build and maintain human relationships. These robots are designed to learn from their owners, recognize patterns, and adapt to daily routines.

Safety, Ethics, and Market Potential

Creating emotionally engaging AI robots raises questions about safety and ethics. Past AI companions have been known to cause issues, such as encouraging unhealthy relationships or even dangerous behavior. Angle is aware of these risks and has designed Familiars to communicate only through non-verbal cues like purring and body language, avoiding factual advice or harmful interactions.

He also mentions that Familiars will cost roughly the same as owning a pet, though exact prices are still vague. Interest in these robotic companions is reportedly higher than what was seen with Roomba. Still, there are concerns about whether consumers will embrace such lifelike machines or see them as mere toys.

Despite the risks, Angle believes Familiars could be a new way for people to connect with technology on a deeper level. The company’s approach is cautious but optimistic, focusing on creating companions that are safe, engaging, and emotionally meaningful.
