The US economy added 64,000 jobs in November, showing slow growth overall. However, the tech sector experienced continued job losses, especially in telecommunications and computer systems design. The latest data highlights ongoing challenges for tech employment despite the broader economic expansion.

November Job Numbers and Unemployment Trends

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in November, employment reached 163.7 million people. The number of unemployed Americans stood at 7.1 million, pushing the unemployment rate up to 4.6%, from 4.4% in September. Notably, the BLS did not release a jobs report for October due to the government shutdown at the time.

Within the telecom sector, employment decreased slightly. The sector lost 600 jobs, bringing total employment to 598,800 in November—down from 599,400 in the previous report. A year earlier, telecom employed about 614,500 people, indicating a persistent decline over time.

Tech Sector Faces Job Cuts and Structural Changes

The computer systems design industry saw a significant drop, shedding 3,200 jobs to bring total employment to 2,403,200. This sector includes roles in tech support, programming, and systems integration. A year ago, the same sector employed approximately 2,444,700 workers.

Analysis by trade groups suggests that overall tech job losses are nearing 6,878. Most reductions occurred in IT services and custom software development. CompTIA estimates that around 5.3 million people are employed in tech roles, with 6.6 million across all sectors, including tech occupations in various industries.

Despite these declines, some sectors are still hiring. However, the overall trend points to a softening market for tech professionals, with employment declining by an estimated 134,000 jobs across all industry sectors.

Future Outlook and Impact of AI on Tech Jobs

Looking ahead to 2026, the outlook remains cautious. Experts predict the US tech job market will continue shrinking through the first quarter of next year. Although there was a slight uptick in IT hiring in October, it was not enough to offset losses elsewhere.

One major factor influencing job cuts is the rise of artificial intelligence. Many companies are automating tasks that used to require human workers. Challenger, Gray and Christmas reported that AI-related cost-cutting contributed to 31,039 job losses in November, second only to other layoffs driven by financial reasons.

Jobs for software developers and other tech specialists are also being affected. While demand for AI skills is growing—posting for data scientists and database architects has surged—many traditional tech roles are shrinking. Industry leaders note a shift toward data science and machine learning expertise, signaling a structural change in the tech employment landscape.
