Meta has introduced a new pair of smart glasses just in time for the holiday season. These glasses, called Meta Ray-Ban Display AI, are designed to look stylish while offering a range of advanced features. Priced at $799, they aim to make wearable tech more mainstream and socially acceptable.

What Makes the Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses Stand Out?

These glasses aren’t the first to have a heads-up display, but they are among the most user-friendly and stylish. They look like regular Ray-Bans but pack a small full-color screen into the right lens. This display shows notifications, navigation info, photo previews, and other visual alerts. The glasses also include a 12MP camera with a 3x zoom, microphones, speakers, and photochromic lenses that adjust tint automatically.

A key feature is the Neural Band wristband. It controls the glasses by tracking muscle signals, allowing users to scroll, tap, or compose messages without touching anything. The glasses are equipped with live captioning, real-time translation, video calling, and an on-board AI assistant that can show visual results directly on the display.

Battery life is impressive, offering about six hours on a single charge, which can be extended to 30 hours with a charging case. The Neural Band itself provides up to 18 hours of use. The glasses will be sold in select stores across the U.S. starting September 30, 2025, with online sales and international launches planned for early 2026.

The Growing World of AI Glasses

Meta’s new glasses are part of a larger lineup of AI-powered glasses hitting the market. Besides the Meta Ray-Ban Display, there are models aimed at athletes, like Oakley’s Meta Sphaera, which features a camera in the center of the glasses but no display. These are designed for outdoor sports enthusiasts like skiers or mountain bikers who want a durable, easy-to-use device that replaces action cameras like GoPro.

Other companies are also jumping into this space. Snap announced its upcoming Spectacles AR glasses with a new operating system, Snap OS 2.0. These will be more advanced, offering features like AR music, text translation, and contextual info, but they might not be as socially acceptable as Meta’s models. Meanwhile, tech giants like Apple, Google, Samsung, and Xiaomi are expected to release their own AI glasses by late next year, promising a crowded market.

Meta currently dominates the smart glasses market with around 70% share, mainly thanks to Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Mark Zuckerberg has been very vocal about his vision for AI glasses. He believes these devices will become the main way people interact with AI, replacing smartphones over time. He even says that those without AI glasses in the future could be at a “cognitive disadvantage.”

What the Future Holds for Smart Glasses

Experts predict that by late next year, AI glasses will become a common sight. The shift from smartphones to wearable AI devices could start as early as 2027. However, privacy concerns are a big hurdle. Many worry about cameras and data collection infringing on others’ privacy or tracking their own location.

To address these issues, some companies are likely to develop privacy-focused glasses without cameras or data collection features. Cost is another factor; some AI glasses are already affordable, under $300, but the price might still deter some buyers. Additionally, not everyone wants to wear glasses all the time, which could slow adoption.

Nevertheless, early adoption among tech enthusiasts is expected to surge this holiday season. By the end of 2024, most people will probably see AI glasses everywhere. Within five years, these devices could replace smartphones as the primary “computer” for many users. The era of smart glasses has truly begun, promising a future where our view of the world is augmented by AI that sees and hears everything we do.
