AI Tool Transforms Healthcare Document Management
WestFax has launched a new AI-powered platform called WestFax Comprehend. It helps healthcare providers handle large volumes of medical documents more efficiently. The platform automates tasks like classifying, extracting data, and routing documents without replacing existing systems. This makes workflows smoother and saves time for busy healthcare teams.
What WestFax Comprehend Does
WestFax Comprehend uses artificial intelligence, optical character recognition (OCR), and FHIR-aligned models to process healthcare documents. It can turn image-based files into searchable PDFs, making data easier to find and manage. It also identifies document types—like lab results or insurance forms—and pulls out key patient and provider details for validation and routing.
The platform can pull documents from various sources, including cloud fax, secure file transfer, drop folders, and cloud storage services. All inbound documents are managed through a central system called Streams, which supports automation workflows. These workflows can include rules for routing, flagging urgent requests, detecting multiple patients in one document, and splitting documents into parts. This gives healthcare IT teams better control and visibility over document intake.
Seamless Integration and Automation
WestFax Comprehend features built-in connectors to integrate with electronic health record (EHR) systems and other platforms. It works with popular storage services like AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Dropbox. Healthcare organizations can also route processed documents into their own private cloud environments, fitting into their existing infrastructure easily.
According to Barry Clark, President of WestFax, the goal was to reduce administrative work while keeping clinical accuracy. The platform enhances existing workflows with practical AI tools that fit into systems providers already trust. Doug Clayton, WestFax’s Chief AI Officer, emphasized that accuracy, compliance, and usability are key. The platform aims to improve workflow efficiency without adding operational risks.
Key Features and Availability
WestFax Comprehend offers several important features. It converts documents into searchable PDFs, classifies files with customizable tags, and extracts patient and provider data automatically. It can detect multiple patients in one document and split them apart if needed. The platform also allows for flexible automation rules and routing, all within a secure cloud environment. Integration with EHR systems and cloud storage ensures smooth operation and data security.
Already available, WestFax Comprehend is accessible to both new and existing customers across the United States. Healthcare providers can start using the platform immediately to improve their document workflows and focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.
