Overstory has successfully closed a $43 million Series B funding round to accelerate the development of its advanced vegetation management technology. Led by Blume Equity, a European growth equity firm focused on climate-tech, the investment also includes participation from Energy Impact Partners (EIP) and a group of existing investors such as B Capital, Semapa Next, Pale Blue Dot, CapitalT, Convective Capital, Bentley Systems, MCJ, and Moxxie Ventures. This new capital comes after a period of significant growth, with Overstory now serving six of the ten largest utilities across the Americas. The funds will be used to enhance their AI risk models and expand into new international markets.

Addressing the Growing Wildfire Risk

Vegetation management presents a major challenge for utility companies, as trees and plants are the leading causes of power outages and wildfires. Managing this risk is often the largest operating expense for utilities, and the situation is worsening due to rising labor costs, increasing tree mortality, and more frequent extreme weather events. Utilities require precise data to efficiently mitigate these threats. Overstory offers a solution by utilizing high-resolution satellite data combined with artificial intelligence, enabling operators to identify risks at the individual tree level.

Andy Abranches, VP of Wildfire Mitigation at Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), emphasizes the importance of technology in wildfire prevention: “Innovation and technology have become the pillars of progress when it comes to wildfire prevention. Satellite data, AI, and vegetation-management intelligence from companies like Overstory are transforming how utilities think about wildfire prevention. The details are in the data, and that precision allows us to deploy our crews where wildfire risk is greatest.”

Advancing Wildfire Risk Detection and Prevention

With the new funding, Overstory is launching an upgraded version of its Wildfire Intelligence product, featuring a proprietary Fuel Detection Model. Unlike traditional fire risk maps, this tool identifies specific high-risk fuel areas across utility networks, pinpointing where dry vegetation could ignite into large wildfires. The software aims to shift utility responses from reactive trimming to proactive risk mitigation by recommending targeted actions that maximize safety and efficiency.

The investment will focus heavily on engineering efforts to ensure these models provide actionable insights that help prevent outages and wildfires. While precise allocation percentages are still evolving, the primary goal is to equip utilities with the most effective data and tools to protect communities and infrastructure.

Overstory’s innovative approach and strong investor support position the company to make a significant impact in wildfire prevention, leveraging satellite and remote sensing technology to safeguard the future of utility operations and community safety.
