There’s a lot of talk about a future without screens, with headlines claiming Silicon Valley has declared a “war on screens.” Reports highlight projects like OpenAI’s upcoming device, which is expected to be a screenless gadget developed by former Apple designer Jony Ive. OpenAI bought Ive’s company, io, last year for $6.5 billion, and companies like Foxconn are reportedly set to produce millions of these devices, even though the design isn’t finalized. Some experts believe we’re heading toward “zero UI” ambient computing, where voice, gestures, and sensors replace traditional screens. The trend was evident at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where many new devices focus on AI-powered functions that don’t require visual attention.

The Rise of Screenless AI Devices

Many startups are working on hardware that operates without screens. One example is Sandbar, founded by ex-Meta employees, which created a smart ring called Stream. It works as a passive controller for audio and voice notes, letting users interact with digital assistants through simple gestures. Another project comes from Eric Migicovsky, the original Pebble smartwatch founder. He’s offering a $75 ring with a button that records voice notes processed directly on a smartphone using AI. These devices aim to make interactions more natural and less distracting.

Another example is Bee, a wearable device that can be worn as a bracelet or necklace. It constantly listens to conversations within range and uses AI to summarize discussions, set reminders, and generate insights. Amazon acquired Bee in July, aiming to expand its presence in the screenless AI market. Even Apple is reportedly developing a small device similar in size to an AirTag that can process voice commands, gestures, and visual cues. Other tech giants like Lenovo and HP are also exploring similar devices.

Why Now Is Different for Screenless Tech

One reason these devices are becoming more practical is the miniaturization of duplex audio technology. This allows for continuous, two-way conversations with AI, which can interrupt or talk over users naturally. This means users don’t have to stop what they’re doing or look at a screen to interact. It’s a big step toward more seamless, hands-free AI interactions that could change how we use technology daily.

However, the rise of these devices has raised concerns, especially about their impact on children. Parents, teachers, and schools worry that too much screen time—whether on phones or tablets—can be harmful. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated its guidelines to focus less on strict “screen time” limits and more on how kids interact with all forms of digital media. They suggest a broader rethink of how children engage with technology, emphasizing quality interactions over simply reducing screen hours.

Looking ahead, the market for ambient, screenless computing devices is expected to grow rapidly. A recent report predicts it will surpass $200 billion by 2030. While some see this as a sign of an impending revolution, the reality may be more nuanced. Many of these devices are still in development, and their widespread adoption will depend on factors like usability, privacy, and how well they integrate into daily life. It’s clear that the push toward less visible technology is happening, but it doesn’t mean screens are going away anytime soon. Instead, it’s more about creating a new layer of interaction that complements our existing devices and habits.
