Are AI and Automation Behind Recent Tech Video Removals on YouTube?
Lately, many tech content creators on YouTube have been noticing strange things happening. Some of their most popular tutorials are being flagged and removed without clear reasons. Creators suspect that artificial intelligence, or AI, might be at play, making it harder to share certain tech guides. But YouTube is denying that AI or automation caused these removals.
Unexplained Video Takedowns Spark Concerns
Several creators have seen their videos vanish suddenly, especially those that show how to do workarounds for installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. These videos are popular because they help users bypass restrictions like Microsoft account requirements. One creator, Rich White of CyberCPU Tech, said his videos are well-viewed and often featured. He was surprised when two of his videos disappeared without warning.
What’s confusing is that YouTube told Ars Technica that these videos were removed not due to an automated system but because of human review. However, creators find it hard to believe, since appeals are being denied very quickly, which seems more like an automated response. Creators worry that if older videos get taken down, their entire channels could be at risk.
Many have noticed that the removals seem to only target recently posted content, but the threat to older videos still looms. For some, their channels are their main income source. White even warned others in a video titled “YouTube Tech Channels in Danger!” that their content could be next.
What Could Be Causing the Removals?
There’s a lot of speculation about why these videos are being flagged. Some think AI might detect certain videos as “piracy” or illegal content. But that doesn’t seem likely here, since many tutorials clearly state that users need a valid license to install Windows 11. White also doubts that Microsoft is behind this, because Microsoft benefits from tutorials that help users bypass restrictions and become loyal customers.
White suggests that YouTube might be relying on AI to flag content but avoiding using it for strikes, fearing over-moderation. He points out that the platform’s automated chatbot often responds suspiciously, even when a supervisor is connected. This leaves creators confused and worried about what they can or can’t post.
Britec09, another popular tech YouTuber with nearly 900,000 subscribers, also experienced a video being flagged as dangerous. He’s been creating videos since 2009 and fears losing years of work. He finds it frustrating that YouTube’s suggested topics sometimes recommend content similar to what gets flagged. This makes creators unsure about what’s safe to post.
Impact on Tech Creators and Future Risks
The uncertainty is causing a lot of stress among tech creators. Many are hesitant to post tutorials that involve workarounds or modifications, even if those guides are legal and helpful. Creators like White have already started censoring some content to avoid risking their channels.
White’s channel grew after a video showing how to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware went viral. Back then, human reviewers quickly reinstated his videos when they were flagged. Now, with the new automated system, it’s harder to get videos back. White worries that if this continues, many channels could face sudden, unexplained removals.
The bigger concern is that if YouTube’s content moderation relies too heavily on AI, innocent videos could be unfairly taken down. This not only affects creators’ income but also their ability to share useful technical information. For now, YouTube has promised to review the reinstated videos and to take steps to prevent similar issues, but many creators remain in the dark about what rules they need to follow.
In the end, without clear guidance from YouTube, tech creators feel like they’re navigating a minefield. They hope the platform will clarify its policies soon so they can continue sharing helpful tutorials without fear. Until then, many are watching closely and adjusting their content strategies, trying to stay within the vague boundaries of what’s allowed.
