Open-Source AI Model Sets New Industry Standards
China-based AI company Z.ai has just released a major new model called GLM-4.5. This open-source AI model is a game-changer, offering high performance at a lower cost. It’s built from scratch with a fully self-developed design, marking Z.ai’s first entry into the open-source community with a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture.
Powerful and Efficient AI with Broad Capabilities
GLM-4.5 is a large model with 355 billion parameters, making it one of the most capable in its class. It also offers a smaller version called GLM-4.5-Air, which has 106 billion parameters but still delivers impressive performance. These models are designed to handle multiple AI tasks, including reasoning, coding, and agentic functions, all within a single system.
The models have been tested on 12 different benchmarks and performed exceptionally well. GLM-4.5 secured third place worldwide and was the top open-source and domestic model in its category. This shows it’s not just powerful but also competitive on a global scale. Another highlight is its efficiency—GLM-4.5-Air performs well among models with around 100 billion parameters, making it a leader in speed and cost-effectiveness.
Affordable, Fast, and Built for Flexibility
One of the key advantages of GLM-4.5 is its cost efficiency. API calls for the model are priced as low as $0.11 per million input tokens and $0.28 per million output tokens, making it accessible for many developers and businesses. The model also boasts native agent capabilities, meaning it can plan multi-step tasks, generate visualizations, and manage workflows on its own. This ‘Agent-native’ design allows the model to reason and act without needing external prompts at every step.
Another important aspect is the open license under which GLM-4.5 is released. It is fully auditable, giving enterprise users control over deployment and fine-tuning. Unlike proprietary models, this open-source approach allows for on-premise installation, customization, and better transparency. According to Zhang Peng, CEO of Z.ai, GLM-4.5 shows that cutting-edge AI can be open, efficient, and affordable, shaping a new future for the industry.
With this launch, Z.ai is pushing towards a more transparent and accessible AI ecosystem. GLM-4.5 is seen as the first real step towards achieving artificial general intelligence that combines multiple intelligent abilities without sacrificing existing ones. It’s a move that could truly revolutionize how AI is developed and used across industries.
