OpenGradient Secures $9.5M to Improve AI Transparency

OpenGradient, a startup focused on creating transparent AI infrastructure, has raised $9.5 million in a funding round led by a16z crypto. The company aims to build a decentralized network where AI models can be hosted, run, and verified securely at scale. The funding also saw participation from Coinbase Ventures, SV Angel, Foresight Ventures, and other notable investors.

The Growing Need for Verifiable AI Infrastructure

AI systems are evolving beyond simple question-answering tools. They now execute trades, manage assets, and make decisions with minimal human oversight. However, incidents involving AI have increased significantly, with a 21% rise from 2024 to 2025. A recent survey shows that only 10% of companies allow AI agents to make decisions independently, but this is expected to grow to 35% within three years.

This rapid growth raises concerns about the safety and accountability of AI. Most current AI infrastructure doesn’t allow developers to verify what a model actually did during execution. They can’t confirm which version ran, what data was used, or what output was produced. This lack of transparency creates risks, especially in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and legal services.

Why Transparency Matters in AI

In sectors where AI impacts real-world decisions, being able to audit and verify AI actions is crucial. Without the ability to inspect which model version was used or what data was received, organizations face accountability issues. These problems can lead to regulatory violations or errors that are hard to trace and fix.

This accountability gap is pushing demand for AI infrastructure designed with verification in mind. Investors are taking notice. The AI and crypto sectors, once seen mainly as speculative, are now maturing. Projects offering verifiable compute and real-time utility are attracting more institutional funding. Verifiable AI infrastructure is becoming a key area of focus within this shift.

How OpenGradient Plans to Use the New Funds

The company plans to use the new funding to expand its network before launching a broader ecosystem. OpenGradient reports having over 2 million users and processing the same number of verifiable inferences. They have generated 500,000 cryptographic proofs and work with more than 2,000 models from over 100 different providers.

The goal is to create a robust, decentralized platform that enables users to run and verify AI models with confidence. By making AI execution transparent and cryptographically secure, OpenGradient aims to address the critical accountability challenges faced by AI developers and regulators alike.
