AI Homework Wins Are Hiding a Learning Crisis

AI can make homework look better while leaving students less prepared for the test that matters. New findings from schools and universities show a striking gap between higher homework scores, shorter assignment times, and weaker evidence of learning.
That gap is growing as students turn to AI models for help. Around 80 percent of nearly 27,000 students in China reported using models such as DeepSeek and ByteDance’s Doubao, creating a large view of how these tools are changing schoolwork.
Higher Homework Scores, Lower Exam Results
After six months, students who used AI saw their homework scores rise by 18 percent across all subjects. Their average assignment time also fell from 64 minutes to 45 minutes, a 30 percent reduction. On the surface, the result looks like a major boost in productivity and performance.
Monthly exams told a different story. AI-using students earned scores that were 20 percent lower than classmates who did not use AI, turning the usual connection between homework and exam performance upside down.
Students who once earned good homework grades tended to do well on exams. Now, students who perform well on homework do worse on exams when AI use enters the picture. The work may look polished, but the knowledge behind it may not remain with the student.
One final exam exposed the divide with even greater force. Before AI was suspected to have been used, the average score stayed in the high 90s and never dipped below 65 percent. After suspected AI use, the average final exam score collapsed to 48 percent.
Dozens of students did not take that final exam, and most of those students had earned perfect scores on the midterm. The pattern raises a direct question: were earlier grades measuring what students knew, or what an AI tool could produce for them?
The Learning Cost Behind the Convenience
Researchers connected to Stockholm University and the University of Hong Kong found that AI use did not produce the same learning loss in every subject. Social science courses saw the worst losses, followed by STEM and language courses.
The amount of time students spent on homework also mattered. AI users who took around the same amount of time as non-AI users experienced smaller learning losses, though the losses did not disappear. That finding points to a difference between using AI as part of a long thinking process and using it to replace that process.
An MIT study found another warning sign inside the learning process itself. Students who used AI to help write an essay showed lower brain activity than students who did not use AI. The AI group also struggled to quote their own essays, suggesting that producing a finished assignment did not guarantee that students had absorbed its ideas.
The reduced brain activity continued when those students were asked to write without AI help. The findings connect AI use with impaired critical thinking and memory loss, turning a faster assignment into a possible trade for weaker recall and independent work.
The concern has also reached college courses. The percentage of A grades in humanities and engineering courses considered vulnerable to AI cheating surged by 30 percent since the release of ChatGPT. That change adds pressure to grading systems that depend on written work completed outside the classroom.
Teaching Students to Challenge AI
Schools are not responding only by trying to keep AI out. Teachers in Charleston, South Carolina, discussed inviting AI into the classroom so students could recognize its mistakes and limitations.
One classroom example made those limits visible. A group of educators in Charleston watched an AI tool create a map of the world filled with errors, including misspellings and incorrect country names. Instead of treating the tool as an unquestionable answer machine, the activity gave students a chance to inspect its work.
That approach changes the role of AI in learning. Students still encounter the technology, but they must test its claims, spot its errors, and understand where its output breaks down. The map’s mistakes offered a concrete lesson: a confident answer can still be wrong.
The studies and classroom efforts point toward a contest between convenience and understanding. AI can raise homework scores by 18 percent and cut assignment time from 64 minutes to 45, yet exams can expose a 20 percent performance gap and final scores can fall to 48 percent.
The next phase of AI in education will depend on whether schools measure finished work or lasting knowledge. Teaching students to question AI, remember what they write, and complete work without it may decide whether these tools strengthen learning or simply make unfinished learning harder to see.
