Amazon’s $5B Investment in Anthropic Focuses on AI Computing Power

Expanding AI Infrastructure to Support Growth
As part of the deal, Anthropic will secure up to 5 gigawatts of compute power using AWS’s Trainium chips. This includes the latest Trainium 3 and upcoming Trainium 4 models. The goal is to fix capacity issues that have limited Anthropic’s ability to serve its users effectively.
Right now, Anthropic faces throttling and session caps because it doesn’t have enough computing resources. The company has had to ration usage to avoid crashes, especially during high traffic times. The new capacity will help support more users, build larger AI models, and reduce these limitations over time.
Scaling Up and Improving Global Reach
A significant part of the new capacity, particularly Trainium 3, is expected to come online this year. Anthropic already uses Trainium 2 through AWS’s Project Rainer, which involves nearly half a million chips for training and running AI models.
The deal also includes expanding inference capabilities in Asia and Europe. This should make Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, faster and more reliable around the world. Plus, Anthropic can choose to buy future generations of Trainium as they become available, ensuring they stay at the cutting edge of hardware technology.
This investment isn’t unique to Anthropic. Other AI companies, like OpenAI, are also boosting their infrastructure. Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank to raise around $110 billion. Their goal is to increase compute capacity, with OpenAI committing to using at least 2 gigawatts of AWS Trainium resources tied to Amazon’s $50 billion investment. Nvidia’s chips are also part of their plan, with 3 gigawatts dedicated to inference tasks.
Changing Ways AI Infrastructure Gets Funded
Experts say these deals reflect a shift in how AI companies finance their growth. Instead of traditional venture capital, many are now bundling investments with huge commitments to cloud services and hardware. This approach helps secure infrastructure buildout and guarantees a steady flow of revenue for hardware providers.
For example, Microsoft invested tens of billions into OpenAI, while also committing Azure cloud capacity for training and running AI models. This kind of partnership ensures that both sides benefit from the ongoing demand for AI compute power. It’s a new way of financing that aligns the interests of startups and cloud giants alike.
