Amazon has officially canceled its highly anticipated Lord of the Rings massively multiplayer online game. The project, which was in development for several years, faced multiple setbacks and layoffs within Amazon Games. Despite initial excitement, the company is moving away from large-scale MMOs, focusing instead on other gaming and entertainment projects.

Development and Cancellation Details

The Lord of the Rings MMO was in development at Amazon Games Orange County and publicly known since 2023. However, in October 2025, Amazon laid off a significant portion of its gaming division, which included the team working on the MMO. The company also shut down its four-year-old MMO, New World: Aeternum, and announced a shift in investment away from big-budget titles, especially MMOs.

Following these layoffs, Amazon confirmed to Eurogamer that the Lord of the Rings MMO was officially shelved. Amazon’s gaming lead mentioned that the company is still exploring new game experiences that honor Tolkien’s world but didn’t confirm any plans for the canceled project. Rumors and insider reports had pointed to the project’s demise for some time, but the official confirmation marks the end of this ambitious venture.

What Comes Next for Tolkien Fans and Amazon

Although the MMO is no longer happening, Amazon still holds rights to develop games based on Tolkien’s works through a 2023 deal with the Embracer Group. The company is also producing the popular Rings of Power TV series, which continues to expand its Tolkien-based content. Meanwhile, Amazon recently shut down another game, King of Meat, just six months after its launch, and is focusing on streamlining its Luna game-streaming service to boost Prime subscriptions.

With these changes, it’s clear Amazon is reevaluating its gaming and entertainment strategies. The cancellation of the Lord of the Rings MMO highlights the challenges large projects face in the current gaming industry. Fans will have to wait and see what new Tolkien-inspired experiences Amazon has in store, but for now, the big MMO is officially out of the picture.
