ChatGPT’s Next Ad Frontier Is Inside AI-Generated Images

ChatGPT is moving ads into a new visual space: the images users ask the chatbot to create. OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026, that it is testing visual advertisements inside ChatGPT, giving its advertising business a new place to appear while keeping the ads separate from the AI-generated image.
The first rollout will begin later this month in the U.S. only. A select group of initial advertisers will promote products and services beside images created with ChatGPT Images, turning a single text request into a new advertising moment.
Ads Will Sit Beside Generated Images
When a user generates an image with ChatGPT Images, an advertisement may appear alongside the result. OpenAI says the ad will be clearly labeled and separated from the image being created, so the sponsored material does not become part of the requested visual.
That separation is central to the test. OpenAI states, “Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created.” The company also says, “Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides,” keeping the chatbot’s responses outside the ad system.
OpenAI first began displaying ads inside ChatGPT at the start of the year. Those ads appear in a sponsored section beneath the chatbot’s outputs, where users can see the sponsor’s name, logo and a link to its website.
The new visual format adds another layer to that product line. Instead of appearing only below text responses, ads will sit alongside images users ask ChatGPT to generate, with OpenAI planning to experiment with additional formats in the future.
A Carefully Limited Advertising Rollout
OpenAI says it has added safeguards so ads appear only beside topics where it would be “appropriate” to advertise something. Users will not see ChatGPT generate ads during conversations about sensitive topics, including personal health or mental wellbeing.
The company introduced ads to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers. After starting the program earlier this year, OpenAI expanded ads to India in August, and the U.S. visual test marks another step toward a broader advertising system.
For now, the new image-related ads will feature products and services from an initial test group. The limited rollout gives OpenAI room to test how ads fit beside generated images before it expands the format or introduces other options.
The scale of the opportunity is enormous. OpenAI plans to target ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users globally once ads roll out worldwide, creating a potential audience that reaches far beyond the U.S. and India.
Measurement Becomes Part of the Expansion
OpenAI is also expanding its ad measurement tools and partnerships. The company is working on click attribution solutions and collaborating with measurement partners to understand how users interact with advertisements inside ChatGPT.
Those efforts include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, Tenjin, Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL. OpenAI has also partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to explore geo-based ad experiments.
Brand safety is part of the plan as well. OpenAI is developing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify, also known as DV, and Integral Ad Science, or IAS. These pilots focus on evaluating where advertisements appear and whether the surrounding topic fits the brand.
That work matters because ChatGPT ads are already forming clear patterns. Business software companies made up almost 20% of ad impressions from March to August, while business and professional services represented 8.5% and developer tools accounted for 4.6%.
Those categories show where advertisers are finding value in ChatGPT today, but the visual format could widen the field. Image generation creates a different setting for products and services, and OpenAI’s future experiments will test how far that setting can stretch without disrupting the chatbot experience.
ChatGPT’s Advertising Model Is Still Taking Shape
OpenAI’s visual ad test arrives as competing AI products push into the same consumer space, including Meta’s Muse, a competing AI app launched by Meta. ChatGPT’s advertising strategy now has several moving parts: sponsored sections beneath answers, visual ads beside generated images, measurement partnerships and safeguards around sensitive topics.
The next phase will show whether users accept ads near creative work without feeling that the experience has changed. OpenAI has promised clear labels, separation from generated images and answers that advertising does not influence.
With a U.S.-only test beginning later this month, the company is starting small while building toward a global audience of 1.2 billion weekly users. The image beside the advertisement may be the first sign of how ChatGPT plans to turn AI-generated content into a much larger advertising platform.
