Debenhams Launches AI Shopping Assistant Inside PayPal App

svg174

Debenhams is testing a new way to make online shopping easier by using artificial intelligence directly within the PayPal app. This pilot project aims to reduce the hassle of mobile checkout and tackle one of the biggest issues online retailers face: cart abandonment. Instead of redirecting customers to a separate website or app, shoppers can now discover and buy products seamlessly through a chat interface integrated with PayPal.

How the AI Shopping Experience Works

The new agentic AI acts as a personal shopping assistant within the PayPal app. Customers can type natural language prompts to find products from Debenhams’ brands, including boohoo, Karen Millen, and PrettyLittleThing. The system doesn’t rely on traditional keyword searches. Instead, it looks at the shopper’s profile to recommend items that match their preferences and budget.

The AI assistant asks follow-up questions to better understand what the shopper wants, helping narrow down options. When the customer selects a product, the transaction is completed within the chat window itself. It automatically uses saved payment and delivery details, removing the need to switch to another site or app, streamlining the entire process.

The Business Rationale and Future Plans

Debenhams processes about 16 percent of its sales through PayPal, making this integration a strategic move. By placing inventory discovery within a channel where many customers already shop, the retailer hopes to shorten the sales funnel and boost conversion rates. This pilot is a collaborative effort between Debenhams and PayPal, with current testing focused on some US customers. A broader rollout to both the US and UK is planned later this year.

The project also includes integrations with external tools like Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot in the US. These tools enhance the AI’s capabilities, making the shopping conversation more intelligent and personalized. Debenhams CEO Dan Finley highlighted the innovation’s potential to transform online retail, comparing it to the shift mobile shopping brought about in the past. He expressed pride in being the first UK retailer to partner with PayPal on this new experience.

Building an AI-Ready Infrastructure

To support this AI-driven approach, Debenhams has partnered with Peak AI to improve forecasting for stock, sales, and pricing. Real-time inventory and pricing data are crucial for the AI to operate smoothly without errors. This partnership helps ensure the system can accurately recommend products and complete transactions without issues.

At the same time, Debenhams launched the AI Skills Academy to train employees in AI applications. This move aims to build internal expertise so staff can manage and improve these automated workflows. It shows the retailer’s commitment to integrating AI into its broader operations and making sure their team is prepared for the future of retail technology.

Overall, this initiative marks a significant step toward more conversational and integrated online shopping experiences. By combining AI, strategic partnerships, and employee training, Debenhams is positioning itself at the forefront of retail innovation, aiming to make online shopping faster, easier, and more personalized for customers worldwide.
