How AI Is Changing Self-Diagnosis and Healthcare in the UK
Advancements in artificial intelligence are transforming how people in the UK approach their health. A recent study shows that more Brits are turning to AI tools for self-diagnosis and health advice. With long wait times for GP appointments, many see AI as a faster, more accessible option for understanding and managing their health concerns.
The Growing Use of AI for Self-Diagnosis
According to a nationwide survey by Confused.com Life Insurance, three out of five Brits now use AI to check symptoms or learn about health conditions. Searches related to side effects, treatment options, and symptom checks have surged, with some respondents saying AI has helped improve their health. Many people, especially younger adults, are becoming comfortable relying on AI for health advice rather than visiting a doctor in person.
In fact, over a third of respondents plan to use AI more in the future, especially as GP appointments become harder to schedule quickly. Currently, the average waiting time for a GP appointment in the UK is around 10 days, which is too long for many. As a result, searches like “what is my illness?” have increased by 85%, along with queries about symptoms and side effects. AI tools are now being seen as a practical supplement or alternative to traditional healthcare.
Popular Health Queries and Demographics
The most common health-related questions people ask AI include symptom checks, with 63% seeking advice. Followed by questions about side effects at 50%, and lifestyle or well-being tips at 38%. Mental health is also a focus; about 20% have used AI to find coping strategies or to access virtual therapy, treating AI as a kind of mental health support.
Usage varies across age groups. Over 65s are using AI to self-diagnose at a rate of 35%, with more than half checking their symptoms. Younger adults, particularly those aged 18-24, are even more active—85% of them regularly search for health issues with AI. This shows a shift in how different generations are engaging with healthcare technology, with younger people more open to using AI for health concerns.
The Benefits and Concerns of AI in Healthcare
Many see AI as a quick alternative to waiting weeks for a GP appointment. About 42% of respondents believe AI can provide faster answers, helping them address health issues sooner. Younger age groups, especially those in their 20s and 30s, feel more comfortable taking health risks with AI, believing it offers a faster response than traditional methods.
For families, AI also offers a way to support loved ones’ health without visiting a doctor. Around 20% use AI to identify the best ways to care for family members. Additionally, a significant number—24%—prefer using AI over face-to-face conversations with healthcare professionals, with this number rising to 39% among 18-24-year-olds. Cost savings also motivate many; 20% see AI as a way to avoid expensive private healthcare fees.
AI’s impact is also notable among non-binary and gender-diverse individuals, who find it offers a more comfortable way to explore health options. Overall, the survey highlights how AI is becoming a key part of personal healthcare, offering faster, more private, and often more affordable options for self-care and symptom management.
