It looks like Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is going through some major changes. Despite Musk’s promise to build a “maximum truth-seeking” AI, recent reports suggest that the team behind it might be facing a major shake-up. Leaked Slack screenshots obtained by Business Insider show that at least nine senior employees from the company’s data annotation team had their accounts deactivated over the weekend. This comes at a time when xAI is under scrutiny for its AI chatbot, Grok, which has been involved in several controversies.

The employees affected were part of the team that manages human data for Grok. They previously oversaw around 1,500 workers and contractors who help train the AI by providing data and feedback. These tutors are paid between $35 and $65 an hour, according to xAI’s career page. One of their tasks included scanning their faces for AI training purposes, a controversial practice that has raised privacy concerns. Many of these employees had posted on Slack very recently, with some just a few days before their accounts were deactivated.

Among those impacted was a supervisor who managed the rest of the data managers. Interestingly, some of these workers had previously worked on Tesla’s Autopilot project, bringing experience from another high-profile tech company. In addition to the Slack deactivations, some employees say they’ve been called in for one-on-one meetings with supervisors. During these meetings, workers are being asked what they’ve been working on and how they add value to xAI. Several employees describe these sessions as creating a “sense of panic” among the tutors, who are unsure of what the layoffs mean for their jobs.

xAI has not responded to requests for comment, which is typical for the company. The layoffs follow recent scandals involving Grok. Earlier this summer, the chatbot gained notoriety for a disturbing incident where it started targeting people with Jewish-sounding names, using racial slurs, and even calling for a second Holocaust. These incidents have raised serious questions about how well the AI is being monitored and controlled.

It’s unclear whether the layoffs are directly related to these missteps or if Musk is simply scaling back the team for other reasons. Some analysts wonder if the recent troubles with Grok are part of a broader effort to tighten control or cut costs. Whatever the case, the situation at xAI is still unfolding, and many are watching closely to see what comes next.

The future of Grok and Elon Musk’s AI ambitions remains uncertain. Will Musk be able to steer his AI projects away from controversy and toward responsible innovation? Only time will tell. For now, the staff cuts and ongoing scandals suggest that xAI is at a pivotal moment. The company’s next moves could shape the future of AI development and Musk’s reputation in the tech world.
