Flourish Care Secures $5.7M to Expand Access to Doula Support
Flourish Care has raised $5.7 million in a seed funding round that was more than fully subscribed. The company aims to make insurance-covered doula care more available across the United States. The new funding will help them expand their services and reach more families nationwide.
Growing Support for Insurance Reimbursement of Doula Services
The funding round was led by Zeal Capital Partners, with participation from several other investors including Create Health Ventures, Collide Capital, Rogue Women’s Fund, and more. Based in Boston, Flourish Care focuses on maternal healthcare, and the recent investment comes at a time when more states are starting to reimburse doula care through insurance plans.
This shift is removing one of the biggest barriers families face when seeking doula support. Currently, Flourish Care’s services are available to over 20 million people covered under various commercial health plans and Medicaid. As policies evolve, the company sees a clear move toward integrating doula care into standard maternal health services.
Policy Changes Drive Broader Access to Doula Support
According to Flourish Care, 46 states are either actively reimbursing or in the process of implementing coverage for doula services. This trend is transforming doula care from an out-of-pocket expense to a formal part of maternal healthcare. The company’s founder and CEO, Melissa Bowley, shared her thoughts on this progress.
She explained that her own experience during her first pregnancy showed how much support women miss between clinical visits. Now, with more states offering reimbursement pathways, Flourish Care has built the infrastructure to ensure more families can access doula support. Bowley emphasized that maternal health improves significantly when a doula is involved, and the new funding will help make that support available to more families across the country.
Investing in Technology and Expansion Efforts
The new capital will support Flourish Care’s expansion efforts, especially in reaching more families through partnerships with insurers, hospitals, community health centers, and provider networks. The company offers a hybrid model combining in-person and virtual doula services, supported by technology that manages matching, referrals, care coordination, and insurance billing.
A key part of the investment will go toward developing new products, including an AI-powered risk prediction engine. This tool will analyze clinical and community-reported data to help healthcare providers identify women who may need extra support early in pregnancy. The goal is to identify risks sooner and connect families with the help they need before complications develop.
Founded in 2020 by Melissa Bowley, Flourish Care is built around the idea of coordinated maternal support. The company aims to fill gaps in maternal care by providing continuous, personalized support that improves health outcomes and makes care more accessible for all families.
