Google Cloud Launches AI Models Tailored for Scientific Breakthroughs

Google Cloud is opening its marketplace to specialist AI models designed for scientific research. These aren’t your typical text-driven AI. They come from SandboxAQ, a company that trains large quantitative models on scientific equations and numerical lab data.

SandboxAQ’s models focus on numbers and scientific principles, not prose. This lets researchers tackle complex problems in biology, chemistry, and materials science with tools built specifically for those domains.

Google paired this launch with Gemini for Science, a suite of AI tools aimed at research workflows. It includes capabilities for hypothesis generation, computational discovery, and literature analysis. Researchers can combine SandboxAQ’s models with Gemini’s reasoning features to accelerate scientific investigation.

These tools are not vaporware. Google already runs private previews with partners and a trusted tester community that includes PhD students, industry researchers, and Nobel laureates. Over 100 institutions, including Stanford, Imperial College London, and The Crick Institute, collaborate with Google to validate these AI systems.

Google’s track record in scientific AI is solid. Its models AlphaFold and AlphaGenome have revolutionized structural bioinformatics and genomic analysis. Now, these new offerings aim to bring similar breakthroughs to industrial R&D and enterprise customers like BASF and Klarna, who leverage AI tools such as AlphaEvolve.

Meanwhile, SandboxAQ recently raised $200 million at a $1 billion valuation. The startup was founded by former Anthropic and Google researchers and builds self-improving AI systems for science. Nvidia and leading venture capital firms backed the funding round.

An industry analyst said, “AI has the potential to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery across biology, chemistry, and materials science. Self-improving systems that can iteratively refine their own models could unlock breakthroughs that would take human researchers decades to achieve.”

Google is rolling out Gemini for Science tools gradually through Google Labs. The goal is clear—make scientific AI accessible and practical for enterprises and research institutions. This is not just about flashy demos. It’s about building AI that researchers can trust and use to solve real problems faster.
