Hack The Box (HTB), a leading provider of cybersecurity training, has introduced the HTB AI Range, a new platform designed to allow organizations to evaluate and improve their defenses against autonomous AI security agents. This innovative environment enables testing of AI-driven security tools in realistic scenarios, with human cybersecurity professionals overseeing the process. The initiative aims to help organizations understand how AI and human–AI teams can collaboratively protect critical infrastructure and respond to evolving cyber threats.

How the HTB AI Range Works

The HTB AI Range simulates complex enterprise environments featuring thousands of offensive and defensive targets that are continually updated to reflect real-world conditions. The platform aligns with established cybersecurity frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, NIST/NICE guidelines, and the OWASP Top 10. In recent AI vs. human Capture The Flag (CTF) exercises, autonomous AI agents successfully completed 19 out of 20 basic challenges. However, in more complex, multi-step scenarios, human teams consistently outperformed the AI agents, highlighting the ongoing importance of human expertise in cybersecurity.

HTB emphasizes that AI currently faces challenges with handling complexity and multi-stage operations, underscoring the need for human oversight in high-stakes environments. The platform provides a testing ground for organizations to assess their security measures against AI-powered threats, develop resilient tools, and bridge the skills gap within their cybersecurity teams.

Enhancing Cybersecurity and Future Initiatives

Organizations can utilize the AI Range for continuous validation of their cybersecurity defenses, making it more effective than traditional static audits or penetration tests. This approach aligns with the concept of continuous threat exposure management (CTEM), ensuring defenses adapt to emerging threats over time. HTB plans to launch an AI Red Teamer Certification early next year to quantify skills necessary for strengthening AI defenses.

As AI technology matures and frameworks like MITRE ATLAS become more prevalent, tools like the HTB AI Range are expected to become standard components within enterprise security strategies. Gerasimos Marketos, CTO at Hack The Box, stated, “We’re addressing the urgent need to validate AI systems in operational contexts where stakes are high, and human oversight remains vital.” Haris Pylarinos, CEO of HTB, also highlighted the company’s ongoing efforts to advance AI-driven cybersecurity training and resilience.
