Kingdom Hearts is moving beyond games. Disney announced a new anime series for Disney+ and Disney Channel, bringing a brand-new story to the franchise while celebrating the characters already known from the games.
Disney described the project as “An original Kingdom Hearts anime series inspired by the beloved video game franchise is coming soon to @DisneyChannel and @DisneyPlus.” The announcement did not include a premiere date, so “coming soon” remains the full schedule for now — a familiar phrase in entertainment, where calendars often arrive after the excitement.
The anime will expand the franchise’s story with new characters and a new narrative rather than simply retelling the games. That gives the series room to stand apart while still building on the Kingdom Hearts world and its established cast.
A new story with a familiar creative foundation
Disney developed the anime with Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix. Nomura serves as the director and character designer of the Kingdom Hearts titles, giving the anime a direct connection to the people who shaped the game series.
That involvement matters because Kingdom Hearts depends on more than recognizable characters. Its identity comes from the way its story, characters, and game worlds fit together, and the anime will expand that foundation without being described as a direct adaptation of one specific installment.

Kingdom Hearts IV also gets a glimpse
Disney paired the anime announcement with a glimpse of Kingdom Hearts IV, the next installment in the franchise. Square Enix plans to release the game in late 2027, giving the series another major project on the horizon alongside the anime.
Kingdom Hearts IV will feature a setting based on Pixar’s Coco. The announcement provides that setting detail but no further information about its role, story, or characters, so the confirmed picture remains deliberately narrow.
The two projects expand Kingdom Hearts in different directions: the anime introduces a brand-new story and characters, while Kingdom Hearts IV continues the game franchise with a setting based on Coco. Both are tied to the same creative partnership between Disney, Nomura, and Square Enix.
