Microsoft Lowers Cloud Desktop Prices Amid Rising AI Costs

Recently, the company has made a move to make these cloud desktops more affordable, even as it ramps up spending on artificial intelligence. This shift highlights Microsoft’s focus on integrating AI into its cloud offerings and encouraging more users to adopt its virtual desktop ecosystem.
Price Cuts for Cloud Desktop Services
Microsoft has reduced prices for Windows 365 and AVD in certain configurations by about 20%. The discounts primarily target lower-tier virtual machines and persistent desktop setups used mainly by task workers and call centers. These are not the high-performance machines used by developers or office professionals but are more economical options for routine tasks. The company is also offering expanded bundled discounts for organizations with existing enterprise agreements and Microsoft 365 subscriptions. This helps reduce the per-user cost for companies already invested in Microsoft’s desktop-as-a-service ecosystem.
In addition, Microsoft is introducing new features to improve efficiency and reduce costs. One such feature is an on-demand start experience that allows Cloud PCs to hibernate when users disconnect. This change aims to lower infrastructure expenses while maintaining performance when sessions are resumed. Alongside these updates, Microsoft is promoting autoscaling and power management features in AVD. For instance, unused instances can now shut down automatically, addressing common complaints about cloud desktops — namely, the cost of idle capacity.
Rising Costs for Microsoft 365 and Windows
While cloud desktop prices are dropping, Microsoft is increasing costs for other key products. Starting in July, the price for Microsoft 365 plans will see a rise of up to 33%. The company argues that this increase is justified by the integration of new AI features, such as Notepad Copilot, which aims to enhance productivity. However, not everyone is convinced that these AI upgrades deliver significant value. Some users feel the added AI features haven’t yet made a noticeable difference in their daily work.
Meanwhile, Windows component prices are also going up. After July 1, licenses for Windows E3 and E5, which are billed per user per month, will see a price hike. The cost of Windows Enterprise licenses, billed per device, will increase by about 31%, from $5.85 to $7.63. According to a major third-party licensing firm, these price hikes could result in a total cost increase of up to 25% for large enterprise agreements by 2026. This has led some to call it an ‘AI tax,’ reflecting the company’s push to fund its AI ambitions.
On the enterprise front, Microsoft is positioning its AI-enabled Windows 365 Cloud PCs as a premium offering. These high-end virtual desktops combine Windows 365 with AI acceleration features, providing integrated AI tools accessible from any device via the cloud. These advanced Cloud PCs require specific SKUs with at least 8 vCPUs, 32GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. While still in beta, this offering shows Microsoft’s focus on blending AI with virtual desktops for a more powerful user experience.
Overall, Microsoft’s recent moves reflect a balancing act. The company is lowering some prices to attract more users to its cloud desktops, while simultaneously increasing costs elsewhere to fund its AI investments. For organizations, this means weighing the benefits of AI-enhanced services against the rising costs of licensing and subscriptions. As the cloud and AI markets evolve, Microsoft’s pricing strategy will likely continue to shift to reflect its broader technological ambitions.
