Siemens Launches AI-Powered Automation Engineering System
Siemens has unveiled a new artificial intelligence system called the Eigen Engineering Agent. It’s designed to help automate and validate engineering tasks in industrial settings. The system can work independently, using smart reasoning and self-correction to handle complex workflows. It connects directly within engineering platforms, streamlining everything from initial design to final testing.
How the AI System Supports Automation Tasks
The Eigen Engineering Agent is built to understand project needs and generate automation code automatically. It can configure industrial equipment, such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other devices. The AI continuously refines its outputs until they meet preset performance standards, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
One key feature is its ability to interpret existing project data. It integrates with Siemens’ TIA Portal, a widely used automation platform, giving it access to project structures, control logic, and system relationships. This means it can produce outputs that match current configurations, even in legacy or poorly documented environments. The system references control logic, component dependencies, and system hierarchies to generate compatible solutions without manual translation.
Workflow Automation and Industry Impact
The AI operates through a step-by-step workflow, breaking down complex engineering problems into manageable parts. It processes each step sequentially, evaluates results, and iterates until the outputs align with project goals. Only then does it present its work for review by engineers. This approach speeds up the process significantly while maintaining high standards of quality.
Industry experts estimate there will be a massive shortfall of skilled manufacturing workers by 2030, with some sectors struggling to fill up to one in five engineering roles. Siemens claims its AI system can perform tasks two to five times faster than manual methods, helping fill the skills gap and improve productivity.
Real-World Applications and Early Results
Siemens tested the Eigen Engineering Agent with over 100 companies across 19 countries. These pilot projects involved organizations like ANDRITZ Metals, CASMT, and Prism Systems. For example, Prism Systems used the system to generate control language code, which reduced the time needed for coding tasks. CASMT applied it to automate device setup, code creation, and HMI visualization during production line development.
Participants reported benefits such as fewer hand-offs between engineering teams and shorter project timelines. The AI system is integrated into Siemens’ TIA Portal, which boasts over 600,000 users worldwide. It is available through Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio, making it accessible to many industrial firms looking to modernize their automation processes.
As manufacturing faces ongoing challenges like data quality issues and workforce shortages, tools like Siemens’ AI system aim to boost efficiency and accuracy. By automating routine tasks and supporting engineers with intelligent insights, the Eigen Engineering Agent could become a key part of future industrial automation strategies.
