NXP and GE HealthCare Drive Innovation in Edge AI for Critical Care
NXP Semiconductors and GE HealthCare have teamed up to develop new AI technologies aimed at improving patient care in urgent medical settings. Their focus is on creating smart, low-latency solutions that help clinicians make faster, more accurate decisions. These innovations are set to be showcased at CES 2026, highlighting how edge AI can make a real difference in hospitals and operating rooms.
Transforming Anesthesia Delivery with Edge AI
The first project combines NXP’s expertise in high-performance, secure edge processing with GE HealthCare’s medical device innovation. It aims to give anesthesiologists a hands-free way to control anesthesia equipment through real-time voice commands. This allows clinicians to stay focused on the patient while managing complex tasks more easily.
By embedding AI directly into anesthesia devices, the system offers reliable, immediate feedback without delays. This reduces the mental load on anesthesiologists, helping to prevent human errors and alarm fatigue, which can occur when alerts become overwhelming. The goal is to make anesthesia management safer and more efficient during surgeries.
Enhancing Neonatal Care with Intelligent Monitoring
The second concept focuses on neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). It uses AI to monitor infants continuously and automatically. The system can detect if a baby is crying or resting, identify unwanted objects in the crib, or recognize if the baby has rolled onto their stomach — actions that are important for keeping babies safe and comfortable.
This AI operates locally on the device, processing images and data in real time. No sensitive images or data leave the device, ensuring strict privacy and security standards. When an event is detected, the system logs it and sends alerts to clinicians if needed, helping staff respond quickly and effectively.
Both projects are built on NXP’s powerful processors with integrated neural processing units and utilize the company’s eIQ AI Toolkit for software development. These tools enable the creation of robust, secure AI applications tailored for medical environments.
GE HealthCare emphasizes that their AI solutions are guided by responsible AI principles. These include safety, security, transparency, and fairness, ensuring that the technology supports clinicians while respecting patient privacy. The collaboration aims to demonstrate how edge AI can improve workflows, reduce errors, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes in critical care settings.
