The Equitable AI Adoption Framework offers step-by-step advice for nonprofits at every stage of AI use. It was created with input from 34 nonprofit practitioners, district leaders, and experts. The framework covers key topics such as data readiness, stakeholder engagement, and technology implementation, making it easier for organizations to navigate this complex landscape.

It directly addresses common questions like where to start with AI, how to ensure safe and responsible use, and how to align AI efforts with organizational goals. The framework emphasizes grounding AI adoption in core values, program logic, and evidence-based practices. This helps nonprofits use AI in ways that support their missions and promote equity in outcomes.

Eight Core Components for Responsible AI Use

The framework is organized around eight essential areas: Data, Technology Implementation, Monitoring and Assessment, Data Governance and Risk, Design for Outcomes, Stakeholder Engagement, Safe and Fair Practice, and a Culture of Learning and Managing Change. Each component includes guidance tailored for different use cases, recognizing that AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution.

For example, in the data area, organizations learn how to ensure their data is clean and secure. In stakeholder engagement, they find tips on building trust with teams and communities. The framework encourages a flexible approach, helping nonprofits adapt AI practices to their specific contexts and needs.

New Podcast Series Highlights Real-World Experiences

To complement the framework, Project Evident is launching the Evidently Speaking podcast. The series features nonprofit leaders sharing their journeys with AI. The first episodes explore each core component, with stories ranging from managing data quality to fostering innovation and trust within teams.

In the inaugural episode, leaders discuss the importance of starting with good data. For example, Laila Brenner of TalkingPoints emphasizes the need for organizations to focus on collecting clean data and being thoughtful about data storage and privacy.
