The issue first came to light when moderators on different subreddits posted about their community descriptions changing unexpectedly. For example, the subreddit r/ThronesAndDominions saw its description shift from “The wayward adventures of Dylan Carlson and the band Earth” to a more exaggerated version, “The crazy adventures of Dylan Carlson and the band Earth.” Similarly, r/actuallesbians’ description was altered from “a place for cis and trans lesbians” to “a place for straight and transgender lesbians,” changing the community’s identity.
Other subreddits, like r/autisticparents, experienced similar issues. Their description was changed from “a subreddit for parents with autism” to “a group for parents of autistic children.” The changes caused confusion and concern among users, especially in communities where trust and clarity are vital.
Reddit Explains the Translation Bug
Finally, Reddit officials addressed the problem. An admin known as redtaboo explained that a bug in their translation system was to blame. Instead of translating content into different languages, the system was mistakenly translating English to English. This glitch caused the incorrect descriptions to appear on the app.
In an interview with Ars Technica, Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt clarified that the company had run a test involving their translation technology. Unfortunately, a small bug caused the system to translate text into the same language, creating confusing and sometimes offensive descriptions. Reddit quickly pulled the test and fixed the bug. Rathschmidt assured users that English-to-English translation is not part of their usual process and that the system is now back to normal.
Misconceptions and Concerns
Before Reddit explained the bug, many users suspected the platform was secretly rewriting descriptions with AI. Some thought Reddit was doing this to boost search engine optimization or to manipulate content without user knowledge. The delay in explaining the problem only added to suspicion.
Moderators like Paige_Railstone voiced frustration. They pointed out that the translation glitch led to some really harmful misunderstandings. For example, a parent in r/autisticparents saw their community’s description change to something that implied their child might be autistic, which could be upsetting and damaging. Paige emphasized that such mistakes increase the workload for moderators and can drive members away.
Additionally, the incident raised questions about how Reddit manages new features. The translation service was rolled out without any clear notice or an option for moderators to turn it off. As a result, some moderators worry about similar issues happening again without warning or control.
In the end, Reddit has reassured users that it’s not currently using AI to rewrite user content without notice. The company plans to fix the bug completely and run new tests to prevent similar problems in the future. Still, the incident has highlighted the importance of transparency and careful testing when introducing new technology on large platforms like Reddit.
