Salesforce Pushes Rival AI Inside Slack, Confusing Employees

Salesforce is stirring internal confusion by promoting a competitor inside its flagship Slack platform. The new player? Anthropic’s Claude Tag—a rival AI agent working alongside Salesforce’s own Slackbot and Agentforce tools.
After spending $27.7 billion acquiring Slack in 2021, Salesforce doubled down on AI for the platform. In March, it launched over 30 new AI features for Slackbot. All these features run on Anthropic’s Claude technology—yes, the same AI behind the competitor now integrated directly into Slack.
Claude Tag works as an “ambient colleague” inside Slack channels. Users type @Claude to assign tasks, which the AI breaks into stages and manages publicly. Unlike earlier bots, Claude Tag retains context over time, learns from ongoing interactions, and autonomously executes tasks. It can also connect to business tools and codebases, acting like a fully-fledged team member with its own credentials.
Rob Seaman, Slack’s EVP and GM, calls this move “making AI multiplayer.” Claude Tag doesn’t work in private back-and-forths. Instead, it operates openly in channels, capturing real organizational context and accelerating collaboration. “Slack is the space where teams collaborate and make decisions every day,” Seaman said. “Claude Tag brings truly collaborative AI directly into shared workflows.”
Salesforce expects to spend $300 million on Anthropic tokens this year and holds about 1% of the AI company, now valued at $380 billion. Anthropic recently eclipsed OpenAI’s valuation, reaching $965 billion—a sign the AI race is intensifying.
Claude Tag replaces the older Claude Slack app, with administrators given until August 3, 2026, to opt in for migration. This means Slack users will soon have both Salesforce’s Agentforce—reportedly hitting $800 million in annual recurring revenue with 29,000 deals closed—and Anthropic’s Claude Tag running side by side on the same platform.
Anthropic plans to expand Claude Tag beyond Slack, targeting Microsoft Teams, email, and project management tools. Meanwhile, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff calls Slack “the interface to AI,” betting the platform will become the central hub for AI-powered work.
The move makes one thing clear: Salesforce is hedging its bets by embracing a rival AI inside its own product. It’s a bold, if confusing, strategy that blurs lines between partner and competitor. Employees and users now navigate a Slack workspace where two AI teammates compete for attention under one roof.
