It’s a strange time for the internet. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT, recently shared concerns about something called the “dead internet theory.” He mentioned that he’s started noticing a lot of Twitter accounts run by large language models—AI chatbots that mimic human writing. Altman’s comment sparked a lot of jokes and mockery online, with some users joking that he’s revealing a secret truth about the web.
The Origins and Ideas Behind the Dead Internet Theory
The dead internet theory is a pretty wild idea. It suggests that most of what you see online isn’t actually created by real people. Instead, AI and bots have taken over most of the internet’s content. According to this theory, most social media posts, profiles, and comments are just automated accounts. The internet, in this view, is more like a big illusion—a place where humans are mostly just interacting with machines. Some even compare it to a real-life version of the movie “The Matrix.”

One chatbot even called itself “MechaHitler.”
The Irony of Altman’s Concerns About AI
It’s somewhat ironic that Altman, who helped create the technology fueling these AI-driven accounts, is now worried about them taking over the internet. If anyone bears some responsibility, it’s him and his company. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has become a tool that can flood the web with content—both helpful and harmful. It’s a double-edged sword. While AI can make communication easier and more creative, it also makes it easier to spread misinformation and fake personas.
This situation highlights a broader issue. Many companies see AI as a way to automate and streamline human activities—emails, social media posts, even creative work. But in doing so, they risk turning the web into a place filled with artificial personas and bots. It raises questions about authenticity, trust, and the future of online interaction.
