A team of Swiss institutions has made a big splash in the world of artificial intelligence with the release of a fully open-source AI model. Named Apertus, which means “open” in Latin, this project aims to promote transparency and inclusivity in AI development. Created by experts from EPFL, ETH Zurich, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, Apertus is designed to be accessible for researchers, developers, and organizations worldwide.

Open Architecture and Accessible Design

Unlike most AI systems that keep their inner workings under wraps, Apertus openly shares its architecture, training data, and documentation. This level of transparency allows anyone to inspect, understand, and build upon the model. The project features two versions: one with 8 billion parameters and a larger 70 billion-parameter model. Both are released under permissive open-source licenses, making them usable for research, education, and even commercial projects.

This approach aims to set a new standard for trustworthy AI. By sharing detailed information, Apertus encourages responsible development and collaboration across sectors. Experts believe that open models like this can lead to safer, more reliable AI tools that serve the public interest.

Multilingual Capabilities and Global Impact

Apertus was trained on an impressive 15 trillion tokens in over 1,000 languages, including many less-represented ones like Swiss German and Romansh. This focus on multilingualism is rare among large language models and highlights the project’s commitment to inclusivity. The model’s ability to understand and generate content in diverse languages helps bridge communication gaps and promotes digital sovereignty for Switzerland.

Swiss researchers see Apertus as a way to foster innovation across multiple areas, from education to industry. The model will be tested during Swiss {ai} Weeks, an ongoing event until October 2025. Participants can access the model through a Swisscom-hosted interface, encouraging collaboration and real-world testing. This initiative underscores Switzerland’s dedication to responsible AI development and global cooperation.

Overall, Apertus represents a significant step forward in making AI more open, trustworthy, and accessible. By sharing its technology openly, Switzerland aims to lead the way in creating AI that benefits everyone and supports innovation across borders.
