The Windows Memory Test That Takes Your PC Outside Windows

What happens when Windows checks the memory inside your computer? Microsoft’s Windows Memory Diagnostic utility leaves the regular Windows environment, tests your RAM through repeated data checks, and then brings the computer back into the operating system.
The process is built into Windows, so there is no separate download to find. Before starting, save all work because the test requires a restart and begins outside the normal desktop experience.
How Windows Memory Diagnostic Tests RAM
The utility checks whether a computer’s RAM can store information and return it reliably. It repeatedly writes data into memory, reads that information back, and checks the returned data for errors. This gives the test a direct way to examine whether RAM can handle the basic task of holding and retrieving information.
The diagnostic runs outside the regular Windows environment so the operating system and other applications do not occupy the RAM during testing. That separate testing space lets the utility examine memory without the same programs competing for it.
Windows includes two straightforward ways to open the tool. Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic in the Start Menu, or press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and hit enter.
A dialogue box then asks whether to restart and check for problems. Choosing Restart now and check for problems (recommended) restarts the computer and begins the test.
Choosing the Test Depth
The diagnostic offers three test mix options: Basic, Standard, and Extended. Extended provides the most thorough test, while the pass count can be changed to repeat the scan up to 15 times.
That gives users control over how much testing the computer performs. A Basic, Standard, or Extended option changes the test mix, and raising the pass count adds more repeats to the scan. The maximum pass count is 15.

That final step matters because completing the scan and seeing its result are separate parts of the process. The computer returns to Windows first, then Event Viewer provides the route to the diagnostic information.
Computer Memory Is Not Human Memory
The word “memory” connects this Windows utility with a very different problem: people struggling to remember information. RAM stores and returns data for a computer, while human memory can be affected by epilepsy, medication, seizure types, stress, and coping mechanisms.
Memory issues can take different forms, including large gaps in memory, trouble remembering faces and names, and random access to recall. Remembering names creates another familiar challenge. Difficulty with names is common, especially for people who do not interact with others every day or who meet people with similar names. Some individuals connect the difficulty with being on the spectrum or with other personal traits, while faces can remain more memorable than names.
Strategies can make those moments easier. Repeating a name can support recall, and honesty can reduce the pressure of pretending to remember. Da Xiang wrote, “Most people will really embrace your honesty and respect you more, not less,” and suggested, “Put away the embarrassment and just yell the person’s name out loud three times right there and then.”
Why Memory Problems Can Feel Different Over Time
COVID-19 has exacerbated working memory issues for some individuals, possibly through stress and coping mechanisms. Chito attributed the change to COVID, which they had several times, while also connecting it with the ways the world changed and existing executive disfunction issues.
