Who’s Building the US’s Next-Gen Orbital Defense Systems
94The US Space Force has revealed the companies working on a new space-based missile defense system called Golden Dome. This system aims to protect US territory from various threats like drones, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons. The list includes a mix of big defense contractors and newer tech firms, highlighting a wide effort to develop advanced orbital interceptors.
Major Contractors Involved
The roster features well-known aerospace and defense companies such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon. It also includes tech-focused firms like SpaceX and GITAI USA, along with smaller players like Quindar and Sci-Tec. Some of these companies had been reported earlier, but now their involvement has been officially confirmed by the Space Force.
These companies are part of a broader effort to create a multilayer shield called Golden Dome, which would be capable of intercepting various incoming threats from space. The program is still in its early stages, but the inclusion of such a diverse group of contractors shows how seriously the Pentagon is investing in space-based missile defense.
The Contracting Process and Fast-Tracking Development
The Space Force awarded 20 contracts to these 12 companies in late 2025 and early 2026. They used a special acquisition method called Other Transaction Authority (OTA). This approach allows the Pentagon to bypass some of the usual federal rules, making it easier and faster to fund and develop new technology.
OTAs are especially useful for rapid prototyping, which is exactly what the first phase of the SBI (Space-Based Interceptor) program requires. The goal is to quickly test and refine these interceptors so they can be deployed sooner, rather than waiting through lengthy traditional procurement processes. This strategy highlights the urgency and importance placed on developing effective orbital defense systems.
As the program advances, these companies will work on designing, testing, and possibly deploying interceptors that could eventually become a critical part of national security. While there’s still a lot of work ahead, the official list of contractors underscores a major push toward space-based missile defense capabilities.
