TikTok Takes Shopping Beyond Its Marketplace With AI and Instant Checkout

TikTok is bringing an AI shopping assistant and direct checkout tools into its app, giving users a way to discover products, get answers, and buy without leaving the platform. The company announced the new features on October 5, 2026, as it expands shopping beyond its in-house marketplace.

The new Shopping Assistant is a conversational AI agent built to help users discover and purchase products. It can understand the context of a conversation and remember a user’s preferences and needs as the exchange continues, making the shopping process more like a guided conversation than a standard product search.

The assistant can provide real-time shopping guidance, including product details, shipping information, sizing, and availability. It can also help users complete a purchase, bringing product questions and checkout support into the same interaction.

Shopping moves into the For You feed

TikTok is pairing the assistant with an in-app checkout feature that lets users buy directly from brands. Someone viewing a product in the For You feed can make a purchase with one click, instead of leaving the feed to visit another shopping site or complete the transaction elsewhere.

That combination matters because TikTok is not treating the assistant as a separate shopping destination. The company is placing shopping tools across the broader app, including the For You feed, so product discovery, questions, and payment can happen in one place.

The new approach could allow TikTok to capture more of each user’s shopping journey and more transaction value. A user may first discover a product in a video, ask the assistant about its size or shipping details, check availability, and complete the purchase without leaving TikTok.

That creates a shorter path between watching and buying. It also gives brands a direct way to reach users at the moment they show interest in a product.

A broader push beyond TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop has been the platform’s main engine for e-commerce ambitions since it launched in the U.S. in September 2023. The new tools broaden that strategy by adding shopping features to the wider TikTok experience rather than keeping them centered on TikTok Shop.

TikTok built the features in partnership with commerce platforms and payment providers including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. Those partnerships support the product tools, brand connections, and payments needed to let users complete purchases inside the app.

The move comes as TikTok’s shopping business already holds a large position in U.S. social commerce. eMarketer estimates that TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, representing roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce.

TikTok also points to the role its platform plays in product discovery. The company’s Economic Impact Report, released last week, said activity on TikTok helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses. The report also said 54 million Americans had purchased a product after watching a TikTok video.

Those figures help explain why TikTok is connecting its recommendation feed with AI guidance and direct payments. The platform already helps users find products through video. Its new features are designed to help answer the next questions and finish the transaction on the spot.

For users, the change means fewer steps between seeing an item and buying it. The Shopping Assistant can handle details such as sizing, shipping, and availability, while the checkout feature lets the purchase happen directly from a brand through the app.

For TikTok, the goal is a fuller shopping journey inside the platform, extending from discovery in the For You feed to payment. The company’s latest launch puts that journey beyond TikTok Shop and across the app where users already spend time watching videos.
