Anthropic Puts 5% of Its Future Value Into Public Benefit

Anthropic is putting equity behind its AI promises. The company announced plans to allocate 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund focused on the societal effects of AI, including disruption across the labor market.
The fund could support large donations to nonprofits and direct distributions to specific populations. That gives Anthropic a mechanism for moving money toward groups affected by AI, instead of limiting its response to research papers, policy statements, and the usual conference-stage optimism.
The commitment still requires stockholder approval. If approved, Anthropic will establish the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company, or LLC, rather than a conventional tax-exempt charity.
Anthropic said, “The fund will be established as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC), rather than a conventional tax-exempt charity.” The company also said it would not use any of the LLC’s equity for lobbying or political contributions in the US or abroad.
A fund that grows with Anthropic
The initial 5% allocation may not be the fund’s final stake. Anthropic’s board could add another 2% of shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline, giving the fund a way to grow as Anthropic grows.
There is an obvious catch: Anthropic has not disclosed the baseline or the valuation milestones that would trigger those additional allocations. Without those details, the growth formula sounds precise while leaving the most important thresholds off the table.
The potential numbers are still large. Anthropic plans to launch a massive initial public offering as soon as November, and the fund’s stake could amount to $100 billion if the company reaches a valuation of $2 trillion in its IPO.
The company’s pledge of 5% of its shares would also amount to $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation. That figure is not a current payout or guaranteed result; it depends on Anthropic reaching that valuation and securing the required stockholder approval.
Equity pledges meet labor-market concerns
Anthropic’s founders and employees have made separate commitments around their own holdings. The founders have pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings, while approximately half of Anthropic’s employees participate in an equity donation-matching program.
Those promises place the public benefit fund inside a wider effort to direct company equity toward AI-related social concerns. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing AI’s impact on the labor market, where the company expects the technology to create economic value while putting pressure on workers.
“AI may generate enormous economic value, but it could also cause instability for many workers,” Anthropic said. That concern explains why the fund includes both nonprofit support and direct distributions to specific populations, rather than focusing only on general charitable giving.
Anthropic also said that “given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed.” Turning 5% of a company into a public benefit vehicle is certainly bolder than another pledge to study the future of work. Whether it becomes a durable model depends on approval, the eventual IPO valuation, and the rules governing the fund’s additional shares.
