Why Nintendo Shrunk the GameCube Disc

The GameCube’s tiny discs were a deliberate compromise. Nintendo chose a proprietary miniDVD format to reduce piracy, cut costs, and build a smaller console, even though the decision limited storage and DVD playback.
GameCube discs measured 3.15 inches in diameter, compared with 4.17 inches for standard DVDs, and held just under 1.5GB. That capacity was enough for GameCube software, but it gave developers less room than the full-sized discs used by competing consoles. Small media was not a random design flourish. Nintendo had a plan.
In the early 2000s, standard PC DVD burners could not read Nintendo’s proprietary disc technology. That made copying GameCube games harder, at least while the format remained outside ordinary computer hardware. The anti-piracy benefit came with a clear tradeoff: Nintendo locked the console into discs that were smaller, less familiar, and limited to the company’s own ecosystem.
A Smaller Console With Fewer Extras
The GameCube launched in late 2001 for $200, while the PlayStation 2 and Xbox launched at $300. Nintendo also saved $20 per console in licensing royalties by leaving out DVD movie playback. The little console could play games, but it could not double as the living-room DVD player that helped sell the PlayStation 2.
The miniDVD format did offer practical advantages. GameCube discs loaded more quickly than PlayStation 2 DVDs, and the console weighed 5.7 pounds compared with the Xbox’s 8.8 pounds. Nintendo made a cheaper, lighter machine with faster-loading media—then removed one feature consumers were already learning to expect from a console.
The sales figures show how complicated that tradeoff became. Nintendo sold 21.74 million GameCube units during its lifetime, while Xbox reached 24 million and the PlayStation 2 reached 160 million. The disc format did not decide the entire console race, but Nintendo’s choices gave buyers fewer reasons to make the GameCube their all-purpose entertainment machine.
That old hardware decision still matters because Nintendo Switch 2 has a Nintendo Classics lineup that includes some GameCube games. The original discs were designed to resist easy copying and fit a compact console; modern access now depends on how Nintendo presents those games again. Hardware constraints have a habit of returning as business decisions wearing a new jacket.
GameCube Emulation Gets Another Contender
For many years, Dolphin was the only major GameCube emulator. A new emulator called Gecko, created by GitHub user Layle, has been gaining popularity and aims to challenge that position through homebrew development, reverse engineering, and an authentic experience.
Gecko is not arriving because Dolphin has collapsed. Dolphin’s compatibility list shows zero percent of GameCube titles as completely broken, which is an unusually strong result for software covering an entire console library. Gecko’s own GitHub states that most games will likely have visual glitches or be outright broken, so its appeal rests on its goals and design direction—not a promise of instant perfection.
Layle answered “Probably none.” when asked what Gecko could offer that Dolphin does not. That blunt answer fits the project’s purpose: Gecko is built for people interested in how GameCube software works, not only for players seeking a polished replacement.
Emulators are not illegal to use. The legal problem concerns the software used to acquire games, and the legal way to use ROMs is to develop your own or dump physical games you own. Dolphin’s FAQ puts the hardware requirement more plainly: “You don’t. Buy games and dump them with a Wii.”
Nintendo has treated emulation as a legal threat when it connects to game distribution. In 2024, Nintendo filed a $2.4 million lawsuit against the creator of Yuzu, describing the matter as “Piracy at a colossal scale.” In 2025, Nintendo served Valve with a DMCA notice when Dolphin was set to be released on Steam.
